This Good Friday reflection, “For You Were Once…” tells a piece of my family’s story as Chinese Americans during the Exclusion Era. It is a story about silence, memory, and what it means to carry fear across generations.

My wife uncovered a trove of my childhood photos. I will post more later, but let this nightmare fuel Easter bunny sink in. Really sink in.
I’m still scared of clowns, mall Santas, and team mascots. No wonder.

OPINION: Trump’s administration has, in shocking fashion, marshaled government resources and used their bully pulpit to attack individual faith leaders and major religious institutions.
Trump isn’t defending religious communities — he’s waging war on them
(RNS) — The Trump administration is already the most harmful to religious freedom in modern American history.

The right of those born on US soil to citizenship were affirmed by the 1898 Supreme Court battle of Wong Kim Ark—a Chinese American born here during this nation’s decades of anti-Chinese exclusion—to be recognized as a citizen.

Trump seeks to destroy Wong’s legacy.

Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco to Chinese Parents. In his 20s, he was denied re-entry to the U.S. on the basis of the Chinese Exclusion Act. His legal case set the precedent for birthright citizenship, something Donald Trump has pledged to attack when in office. #Velshi
How an American-born Chinese man ensured birthright citizenship in the U.S.
Wong Kim Ark was born around 1870 in San Francisco’s Chinatown. After moving back to China, he hoped to return, but was barred by the Chinese Exclusion Act; the U.S. did not consider him a citizen. The legal case that followed ensured that the 14th Amendment – birthright citizenship – was guaranteed for anyone born on U.S. soil.

Jimmy Carter was right about climate change. He was right about the Mideast conflict and apartheid in Israel and South Africa and the ongoing plagues of poverty and racism. It was he not Reagan who freed our hostages in Iran. A true man of God, he died beloved, which not many presidents do or will.
