If you haven't finished #Silksong this doesn't make any sense, but if you have, it's absolutely WILD how perfectly this fits (and how gut-wrenching it is, layered on top).

God, what an amazing story. How tangled up and evocative it was. It really is a masterpiece.

I both started and ended 2025 with books by Glen Cook.

The first book I read this year was Port of Shadows, which I had somehow missed the publication of and was thrilled to discover. And I ended with Lies Weeping, which I devoured.

What a glorious year for me as a huge fan of The Black Company. 😊

Based on data from 27 reports, basic income recipients are more likely to find long-term employment, and not a single pilot has resulted in reduced work. Recipients also experience less stress, because of course they do.

SNAP already doesn't allow people to buy hot prepared foods. It's a paternalistic program and because it's targeted by income, it creates divisive stigma and also imposes 30% marginal tax rates on recipients. The way to improve it is do cash instead, remove conditions, and universalize it, thus UBI.
Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah and West Virginia are the first of at least 18 states to enact waivers prohibiting the purchase of certain foods through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
SNAP bans on soda, candy and other foods take effect in five states Jan. 1
Starting Thursday, Americans in five states who get government help paying for groceries will see new restrictions on soda, candy and other foods they can buy with those benefits.

In an award winning example of immediately obvious bad parenting decisions, my dad let me watch RoboCop when I was 8.

I didn't get all of it, but holy hell, did it ever affect me big-time.

Of course I love horror movies and action movies and violent movies to this day, so on the whole it's fine. 😝
Name 1 movie from your childhood you were way too young to watch.

Good news! The unredacted, unfiltered Epstein files already exist! They're called "believing the victims," and we've had access to them for years already.

Stop waiting for more and hold the fucking abusers accountable!

If you post that a "woman or colored person" can't be elected in America, or "not this cycle," I'm going to assume you're a Russian bot and block you. Get the fuck out of here with that bigoted, defeatist bullshit.

You know who NOBODY should vote for? Establishment Dems and their corporate backers.

Decades after universal basic income gets implemented, an entire generation is going to feel this way about movies and shows depicting poverty.
this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

A better world will always be possible and it was all along. An income floor to stop the ravages of poverty was possible decades ago. It never has to be like this.

New article from me today about the new study of Finland's basic income experiment that found recipients of unconditional income had 33% better mental health than the control group that got the same amount of money with conditions. I also dive into a lot of other evidence about UBI and mental health
Finland Gave Two Groups Identical Payments. One Experienced 33% Better Mental Health.
New research from Finland's basic income experiment proves that simply trusting people with money—not just the money itself—significantly improves mental health

One of the reasons universal basic income is so important is how it can directly distribute a share of GDP growth instead of relying on jobs to do it. Another reason UBI is important is because it increases bargaining power for everyone, which in turn will empower unions and function as strike pay.
Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

UBI isn't meant to replace the income from all jobs, and we aren't going to lose all jobs, especially if we have UBI to maintain spending. What UBI excels at is functioning as a floor and a dividend to make sure everyone gets a rightful share and a cushion to prevent the worst + enable new pursuits.

If you prefer his vision of America to hers, you're a piece of fucking shit.

How did the country sink so low? Every single person who voted for this should be dying of shame on a daily basis at this point. We have utterly lost our way.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.
