Walking out of @realgdt.bsky.social ‘s Frankenstein, my best friend said that Mary Shelley would have been proud. I couldn’t agree more—it captures the emotions of the book perfectly as well as pays homage to classic versions of before. See it on the big screen if you can!!

Let’s talk PUNCH-UPS.

Punching up a script is the process by which a script that’s working well gets funnier, tighter, and any remaining wrinkles get smoothed out.

I’ve been in hundreds of punch-ups and learned a few lessons along the way…

In Adaptation, a fictionalized Robert McKee says, “The last act makes a film. Wow them in the end, and you got a hit. You can have flaws, problems, but wow them in the end, and you've got a hit.”

Bull. Shit.

Nobody’s making it to Act 3 if your Act 1 sucks.

I struggle with loglines. And based on the #Scriptsky #Screenwriting #WritingCommunity posts I’ve seen, so do lots of other people. Loglines are hard! But if you’re trying to get people interested in your script/book, it helps to have a great one. So here’s a 🧵 on some LOGLINE DOs and DON’Ts.

I’ve joked that I pay my agents 10% of my salary - not to find me jobs - but to be the ones who have to hear I didn’t get the job… over and over and over again.

Like any creative industry, #screenwriting is hard and brutally competitive. So here’s a #Scriptsky #WritingCommunity 🧵 on REJECTION.

These are some very helpful….notes. 😆
#ScriptSky
I’m a people-pleaser. To a fault. So when I get notes, I have an impulse to do exactly what the note-giver says. Even if it goes against my writing instincts and is likely to make my script worse. It took me years to develop a better strategy. So here’s a #Scriptsky #Screenwriting 🧵on NOTES.

This is a super important distinction!
A reminder that Hustle Culture and Striver Culture are two different things. Believing that every available waking moment of your day should be monetized is toxic AF; striving for an achievable dream that could change your life by giving it a few hours of yours a day isn't. You're worth betting on.

There was a segment on last week's Scriptnotes that really spoke to me.

It was presented as an issue for screenwriters out of work, or with long stretches between jobs, and how that state has a tendency to push creatives toward safety.

But when I heard it I thought about emerging screenwriters.

Encouraging writing advice for the day!
A few years into my TV writing career, I was struggling! But one simple piece of advice changed the entire trajectory of my career. So I wanted to do a #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread about that advice and the ways in which CREATIVITY CAN FLOURISH (and also how it wanes).

#Screenwriting is a competitive profession. Not a lot of jobs, but lots of people who want them. So when someone you know gets one and you don’t, you might feel lousy. But I’d encourage you to adjust your thinking. Why?

Here’s a #Scriptsky 🧵 about JEALOUSY and the value of BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS.

Wise words here!! #ScriptSky
When I worked on #TheOffice, my best friend on the show was also an aspiring writer. He was talented, well-liked, worked hard, but his writing career didn’t pan out.

Years later, his biggest regret was “not being more ENTITLED.” I knew just what he meant.

A 🧵 on good/bad entitlement.

Try this any time you're not quite sure how to get from A to B and see if it helps.

Or use this technique once you've finished your first draft to check for any plot holes or illogical plot progression.
