The Script Reader

I've been a professional Script Reader for over a decade. Most amateur screenplays are really bad. I'm going to help change that. (No direct messages. Bluesky Age Verification can F-off) www.scriptreaderscheatsheet.com
Yes, the Freebies are slowly trickling back onto the website (with minor design updates).

Over description. Ugh.

Figure out what we need to know, and what we don't.

Let the scene heading do some of the legwork.

Try to only list props that'll come back into play.

Focus on mood, tone, and atmosphere, rather than bullet-pointing items.

Less is more.

Before adding titles, question whether is enhances the story or not #scriptsky

In general, I'd say focus on the story, rather than where the titles go, but yes, sometimes, an inventive title placement can be a great way to kick off a script. #scriptsky

No, not all camera directions in a spec script are bad.

If they're enhancing the story, great, but usually, it's a case of a noob writer believing that they need to include these things when, realistically, the director is responsible for adding these elements during pre-production. #scriptsky

A script that's too long is certainly more off-putting than a script that's too short.

The longer the script, the longer the read time and the bigger the budget. #scriptsky

A bigger question is "Is the sitcom dead?" Off the top of my head, I can't think of a 2025 sitcom everyone raved about.

Maybe there's not a lot to laugh about these days 😢 #scriptsky

Who doesn't love free-to-enter writing programs?

Now, I'm not saying it's worth joining the military just to help you break into screenwriting, but for any vets (not the animal type) with stories to tell, this one's for you. #scriptsky

The whole page is pretty much a red flag (hopefully you can make it out. Sorry, the text looks really small).

One look at a script formatted this badly, and a Reader instantly knows it's a pass, which is a shame, because the story isn't all that bad.

Formatting matters. #scriptsky

Let's be real, cutting production costs without compromising on engagement will make a spec script more appealing because there's less financial risk.

Cutting costs can be an exercise in creativity, rather than crippling opportunities, so get thinking! #scriptsky

Screenwriters like to over-direct on the page, while actors want to bring their own interpretation to the table. So, maybe let the Director decide who does what and how. #scriptsky

A quick rundown on different ways to direct on the page. #scriptsky

There's really only two reasons a spec script is memorable. It's either an exceptional idea (a brilliant opening or ending), or it's rubbish.

My best advice on this is to READ OTHER SCRIPTS. Figure out what makes other scripts bore you and learn how to avoid doing the same. #scriptsky

I'm trying to move the website, which is proving to be an absolute nightmare, so sorry, it's another repost until I get everything sorted.

Good news is, hopefully, there's going to be room for longer line notes and script feedback, so get writing! #scriptsky

@pitchmyproject.comThere are rare occasions when announcing action works, but in most cases, it can be classed as redundant prose.

Why waste time telling us something twice, right? #scriptsky

Not ending a sentence with a period is probably my number one pet peeve right now.

Surely they still teach this in school, right? #scriptsky

Some quick line notes for you (wasn't quick for me, lol).

Ultimately, it’s the shoddy English that lets the piece down. Good news is, that’s easily fixable. #scriptsky

If you’d like Instagram line notes on your script, send it in PDF form to scriptreaderscheatsheet@gmail.com.

Dunno about anyone else, but while I agree with this advice, I find that if you take a break from writing, it's soooo hard to get back into it.

In other words, never stop writing!
