I think Trump improvised his statement about "running" Venezuela and now Rubio et al have to work out language. It was always about controlling oil, and having a friendly government in power (even if they are protesting).

Looking to understand the long history behind the US attack on Venezuela? Here are a few introductory-level reading recommendations from a professor and historian of US-Latin American Relations: (1/5)

For those trying to make sense of the underlying ideas & motivations at work here, in the history of US foreign relations ideology, unilateralism + interventionism have been core components of isolationism along with Monroe Doctrine justification to use force + assert influence in the hemisphere.🗃️

For anyone looking to read up on the long history of U.S. unilateralism in Latin America -- and how it is inseparable from the history of the United States itself -- one of the books I use in the classroom is Brian Loveman's NO HIGHER LAW. It's dense & encyclopedic, but exhaustive & judicious.

History rhymes: 1902-3 Venezuela crisis, 1904 Roosevelt Corollary, 1905 US unilateral interventions (e.g., warships, marines in the DR). US as unwanted, unelected "World Constable"🗃️

Following and reposting for ideas for my own grad research seminar!
I am looking for examples of well-structured 20th century US history articles, ideally written by junior scholars, ideally something to which my MA research seminar participants can aspire? Something where a bunch of the research could have been done in a semester?

Wow, I'm in some great company! Just ordered Death of the Author--thanks for the rec, @nathankfinney.com!
It wasn’t a banner year for reading, but it was eclectic. Aiming for twice as many in 2026.

If I could recommend only one, it’s definitely “Death of the Author” by @nnedi.bsky.social. Her books are imaginative, innovative, and thoughtful.

Yay!! Hope you enjoy it!
New book finally in hand. I’ve been looking forward to reading this by @renatakeller.bsky.social.

Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

I'm always happy to purchase a Rick Steves guide, even if I never end up making the trip. The entire spirit of how he travels is so joyous and open. It always comes through in his books. It's really, truly lovely to see that book money used in this way. Might go buy another right now...
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

According to Karoline Leavitt, “The plaques are eloquently written descriptions of each President...As a student of history, many were written directly by the President himself.”

AS A STUDENT OF HISTORY

This is the dumbest timeline, which I can say confidently, as an actual student of history.

More Bolivians died as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis than did Cubans... just one of the insights from @renatakeller.bsky.social's new book and her fascinating interview on @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social:
The first hemispheric history of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the shock waves that reverberated through Latin America.

Renata Keller describes deadly riots that shook Bolivia, Argentina's naval quarantine and much more. @renatakeller.bsky.social

This is what is going to happen. There will be a thin top layer of non-digital universities — and all the tech billionaires will send their kids to those places.
Total success to the first college/university that pledges to be AI-free and brand it as an opportunity to receive a real education.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.
