Tucker is a monster and should be treated as such
Kyle Tucker
June 2024, fractured shin from foul ball
June 2025, fractured hand from a slide
Sept 2025, left calf strain

Kyle Tucker when he plays

Early's control is still a question mark. If it slips back over a larger sample in the majors, can he maintain his high strikeout rate to offset it?

A new McAdam dropped on Masslive.

fwiw, I heard the Marte to the Sox holdup was because of the position player they were asking for, which wasn't Duran.

Over the last two seasons, Suarez and Gray are 17% and 23%.
A lot of pitching can be boiled down to simply K-BB%, and there isn't a clearer indicator of how badly the Red Sox need to acquire someone to slot in behind Crochet this offseason.

I like Ranger Suarez, super interesting control / bad contact / big game guy... but after doing the Gray deal, paying market rate for Suarez, knocking a decent pitcher out of the rotation, losing the bonus pool money and picks... not a huge fan of the overall operation.

Good understanding of reality by Passan today

Avoided one really annoying pivot, at least. So many people wanted him last winter (from the front office to fans...) and he batted .371/.463/.543 through his first 9 games, and .224/.271/.361 in his final 98.
Cardinals and Diamondbacks have agreed on a deal to send Nolan Arenado to Arizona

One of the most insane sports facts maybe ever
The Steelers have now lost seven straight playoff games. They have trailed on every second-half snap in every one of those games.

Breslow made a quip about holding on to all 4 outfielders yesterday. He may, the inner circle decision making is very, very small. However, since the Bregman news broke, I’ve come to strongly suspect Rafaela or Duran is going to be traded before spring training to rearrange some of the offense.

I've seen rotation hierarchies that have Crawford far down them... I'm pretty sure if he's healthy he's going to be in the opening day rotation, he's more valuable to the team than Sandoval for instance, and pushing Early to the opening day roster over him makes little sense.
Kutter Crawford pitched off the mound this week for the first time since coming back from his injuries.

Red Sox in the 2000s

14 years with Ortiz as primary DH, 45 playoff wins, 3.2 per season.

5 years with Martinez as primary DH, 17 playoff wins, 3.4 per season.

7 years with neither of the two as primary DH, 2 playoff wins, 0.3 per season.

2026 projections keep populating fangraphs. Duran stays the most interesting to me, mostly because of how Passan says the Sox are valuing him.

Potentially very shitty game of musical chairs unfolding
The Diamondbacks are pulling superstar 2B Ketel Marte off the trade block. He’s staying in Arizona.

How much with Roman Anthony swing in 2026?

No Red Sox arbitration cases later this winter, but I always think it's interesting what can and can not be argued in arbitration cases for players that do not settle today:

The front office regime change with the Nationals is obviously going to be interesting for Sox fans to watch from afar. Earlier this offseason this is how they started headlining their job postings for baseball related openings from interns to on-field.

So, @jcmccaffrey.bsky.social confirms the ESPN report that the Red Sox have an “aggressive” offer out to Bregman. idk what that means, but the higher Bergman’s price goes, the more I’d rather Bichette. And as always we should just sign Tucker.

With an offer to Alex Bregman on the table, Red Sox holding their ground for now
The Red Sox have an "aggressive" offer out to Bregman and appear to be taking a patient approach in negotiations.

Bregman and Bichette are each talking to the Red Sox and Cubs but neither wants to sign before the other. Blue Jays too, but they are focused on Tucker.

Justin Wilson is likely to retire unless he gets a fair deal from a legitimate World Series contender.
Latest notes with Will Sammon:

*Effect of luxury tax on free agency

*Cubs in mix for Bregman, Bichette

*The delay on Donovan

*Mets working trades

*O’s would punt a pick

*Justin Wilson mulls retirement

*White Sox seek SP

*Brewers’ interesting hire

Bregman was on a 400 plate appearance rampage leading into his May quad injury. How much of that can be rekindled going forward, and for how long?

Here are the players that had the highest Chase Rates through their age-24 seasons, with a minimum of 1,000 plate appearances... and how their Chase Rates moved after that.

The dead period ends today. The first time teams can reach out to their players that are not on the 40-man roster since before Thanksgiving. A bunch of guys will be heading to Fort Myers soon. Basically gets the ball rolling on the season.
January 2, 2026 at 5:08 PM
Rafaela has played 13 full months in a row in the majors. His 3 good offense months are the 3 months he has had an Isolated Power > .200 (league average .160).
