Can AI achieve K > 20 without biological stakes?

According to R2R the answer is no and @robertchisciure.bsky.social and @drmichaellevin.bsky.social K metric agrees.
"Cognition all the way down". Great to see this fine new paper from @robertchisciure.bsky.social & @drmichaellevin.bsky.social out now in Synthese - introducing a new metric to quantify biological intelligence as search efficiency in multidimensional problem spaces link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This is very interesting viewing it through the Value Saturation lens, specifically the role of the ACC.

R2R distinguish systems that engage recursive processes without representing them (implicit) from those where recursion becomes a manipulable cognitive construct (explicit). This paper shows a enzymatic network is the former.

We think we understand the relationship between feeling and caring. It seems obvious: things matter to us because we feel them. Pain feels bad, so we care about avoiding it. Pleasure feels good, so we seek it out...

You can't escape being you. Value Saturation explains why: when biological systems build recursive self-models under survival pressure, consciousness becomes structurally necessary. What makes minds feel from within.

Panpsychism is intellectual escapism.

Face the biological reality. Do the hard explanatory work. EARN the understanding.

Do not ASSERT ontological laziness.

Compartmentalization plays a crucial role in R2R/Value Saturation as a universal principle that appears across scales from atoms to solar systems, from cells to conscious minds, serving as a fundamental response to physical constraints that enable recursion to exist and stabilize.
How can we design complex computational systems using synthetic biology? Check our paper, where we use space as a computational element, dramatically reducing communication requirements while allowing modularity, reusability, scalability & minimal cell engineering.

Hetenyi et al. (2025) demonstrate alpha oscillations may reflect optimal integration windows for combining top-down predictions with bottom-up sensory input.
Oscillatory templates in occipital cortex very well may be the mechanism for R2R's evolutionary stage Temporogenesis.

Ferreira sees the newborn as conscious; I see them as sentient—feeling before reflection.

Even if newborns are only sentient, they already warrant moral concern; sentience itself needs to carry ethical weight in this world.

Solé et al. show life's architecture is severely constrained: linear info carriers, threshold neurons, cellular compartments are thermodynamically inevitable. My R2R framework shows these same constraints create recursive depth. When recursion meets authentic survival stakes
