The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

The BBC should absolutely be biased against fascism, genocide, and transphobic conspiracy theories. After years of seeing the BBC failing to hold anyone to account for blatantly lying and covering for mass murder, we're about to see it slide even further to the right. Something has to give.

For today I will be a centrist. Geert Wilders' Partij voor de Frijheid (PVV) is one of the most insidious forces in European politics and it is a stain on The Netherlands that it was ever in government.

PVV was one of the early innovators of the "we like gays and hate Muslims" brand.

I am now several layers deep researching Aspin rotary valve engines because Roberta Cowell tried to build Aspin-powered racing cars after WW2.

This is disconcerting as my engineering skills previously amounted to stuffing a circular soap bar into the drain of a hotel bath because there was no plug.

It's extremely sad that the conversation isn't "Look how we're systematically exploiting disabled labour." As if disabled people working is just enrichment to keep us occupied.

Since the 'ceasefire':
- Israel has killed at least nine Palestinians in Gaza.
- Israel has notified the UN that it will again impose aid restrictions if Hamas does not locate and hand over the bodies of dead captives.
- The majority of Palestinian territory remains under Israeli occupation.

The Labour Government is pursuing a policy of sabotage - they don't have to abolish trans-friendly legislation, they just have to pack the relevant bodies with anti-trans obstructionists so that the legislation becomes utterly meaningless. Expect more of this.

As a litter picker I'd like to point out that the problem of litter is worst in areas that have low income, high population turnover (ie nobody can afford to settle down) and high density. The solution is wealth redistribution, ending landlordism, and more funding, not shaming campaigns and racism.

One of the things I'm learning from writing a biography of Roberta Cowell is that telling life stories from a trans perspective sometimes means greatly reducing the emphasis on the subject's transness, letting it be just one part of a whole. Cowell was first of all a racer, engineer, and aviator.

Historically, there is an almost direct negative correlation between the reach of Govt ID systems and trans people's rights. Looser systems give fewer opportunities to oppress.

You know, on top of all the other obvious reasons that this is a horrifying idea.

We're not going to do anything to stop the genocide, but we recognise the people who are being targeted. That just makes our inaction even more reprehensible...
September 21, 2025 at 2:49 PM
Starmer calling for unity and to 'reject hate' right now is a microcosm of why liberalism is failing to comprehend the current moment. The message is fine, but the problem that needs solving is the ongoing genocide and the global slide into autocratic ethno-nationalism, not abstract 'hate'.

Article 8 is what trans campaigners used to get the Gender Recognition Act through the Goodwin and "I" cases in 2002, when the ECHR ruled that forcing trans people to reveal their sex assigned at birth violates their privacy. 'Updating it for the modern age' just means reducing people's rights.
Bridget Phillipson, "Labour believes there needs to be reform to the ECHR"

Trevor Philips, "You want to see changes in the ECHR?"

Bridget Phillipson, "Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is looking at Article 8 Provisions to see if they need updating"
