I love this shot from Brooklands in 1937. The difference in car sizes was bonkers in those days.

My next book Deviants and Trailblazers: A History of Trans Activism in Britain is in the @plutopress.bsky.social Spring/Summer 2026 catalogue (for a May '26 release)!

This book is the first joined-up history of trans activism in the UK all the ways from the 40s to the present.

Roberta Cowell explaining how fellow prisoners of war passed the time during WW2. They would shout this at a guard tower and then run away.

In 1971 a man was fined £1 for making a rude gesture at a Salvation Army band at an anti-porn rally.

Thank you for your attention.

I'm searching for trans motor racing drivers/riders in history! If you come across any, please do share, especially racers from outside the UK and North America.

I currently know of Roberta Cowell, Michelle Duff, Charlie Martin, Deborah Stokes, Sophie Rebecca, Jerri Bean, and Terri O'Connell.

Instructions circulated to civil servants stipulated that, as there could be 'tragic results' if the DHSS revealed a trans person's status to employers, staff should refer to them in their 'adopted sex' unless told otherwise (‘Disclosure of information – transsexuals’, Oct 1978, TNA, BN 80/143).

The notes distributed in the DHSS following an interview with Jones (reproduced in this picture) were dismissive, describing her as suffering from 'a mental conflict' and of being 'prone to obsessions'.

She had apparently extracted similar adjustments from the Ministry of Education in 1959, and ...

My next book, a history of trans activism from 1944 to 2023, is coming along nicely! Just finished a new epilogue covering the huge rightward shift in the public conversation on trans issues over the last few years. It's a bit depressing, but UK trans people have overcome similar challenges before.

Map of signatures for the petition to repeal the Gender Recognition Act by constituency. Scottish anti-trans groups seem to be 'getting out the vote' more effectively (although the total number of signatures is still very low - 13,000).

🎄Happy Christmas, friends! God became flesh and dwelt among us - not to build up treasure in palaces, but to seek out the forgotten; those for whom the word "us" has no meaning. In the coming year, let's be sensitive to those dark places where each of us can be that "us".

Trump's obsession with buying/annexing Greenland is silly, but I always thought this image from 2019 was a banger.

In Oct 1944, British trans man Robert Allen got approval from the Registrar General to have the sex marker on his birth certificate amended. He later rejoiced in his memoir (1954): 'an error that had ... made havoc of my life, was rectified’. Michael Dillon achieved the same thing in April 1944.

On 1 Aug 1997, Blair's press secretary Alastair Campbell wrote to Home Secretary Jack Straw to warn him against launching a review of the laws around trans people and gender identity. He struck his usual mildly threatening tone.

In the 1970s there was only one nationwide UK trans org, the Beaumont Society. In 1979, Hazel, a 'transsexual with innate radical feminist views', sent a letter to the group's newsletter attacking its conservative politics and asking where ‘all the young radical transvestites and transsexuals’ were.
