New preprint!
Metaphors shape how people understand politics, but measuring them (& their real-world effects) is hard.

We develop a new method to measure metaphor & use it to study dehumanizing metaphor in 400K immigration tweets Link: bit.ly/4i3PGm3

I've updated Caracal to Qwen 2.5 VL. Enjoy!!

For those who haven't used it, it's free a free-to-use zero-shot HTR and NER app with historical documents in mind.

Friends, for something to be open source, we need to see

1. The data it was trained & evaluated on

2. The code

3. Model architecture

4. Model weights.

DeepSeek only gives 3, 4. And I'll see the day that anyone gives us #1 without being forced to do so, because all of them are stealing data.

In the new year I’m going to publish a history of the last 5 years of building @transkribus.bsky.social as an AI cooperative: shared ownership, shared resources, all profit reinvested into infrastructure. It turns out we can build a better tech world together, but that takes work & community.
Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back.

We face a similar challenge in all courses that have a coding component. On the one hand, we need to critically revise learning objectives when LLMs can code so well. On the other, redeveloping all assessments has huge labor costs! I’ve been losing sleep over this.
