126 - Princess Arete
Intentionally slow-paced and contemplative, it deconstructs fairy tale tropes in a way that never feels clichéd or obvious. It really is a hidden gem of a movie

It's far from being a perfect movie, it clearly needed a deeper characterization, but I appreciate Disney the most when they push out of their usual boundaries, as they tried to do with it, its atmosphere is so unique in their canon

This is Kuro no Ken, AKA Blade of the Darkness, which IIRC is the PS1 port of a Windows remake of a PC-98 RPG and I really will have to write about it soon :)

20 years ago, Dragon Quest found its modern western identity: Dragon Quest VIII finally kept its original name, went with a wonderfully british dub, orchestral music and a beautifully reworked interface - an amazing adventure that set the tone for most that came after. Also: Yangus was awesome!!

EverGrace's development pushed FromSoftware's team in coming to grips with the PS2 (and which was briefly developed for the PS1 before the about face!). But in trying out a few new ideas, it's an interesting peek at FromSoft's early history with a different, and not as bloodthirsty, kind of RPG!

Critics in general gave FromSoft's adventure something of a cool reception. EGM's review crew knocked the game for a variety of different reasons ranging from technical issues like its "obnoxious" load times to its "jaggy visuals" while praising features like its "dress-up" system.

EverGrace was rough around the edges but it also had a few neat ideas, too, such as utilizing a "paper doll" inventory system (a concept that had also seen use in the PC space with games like Ultima VI in 1990). Dungeons were also filled with action and, sometimes, devious puzzles.

Aside from choosing between two different characters (who eventually do come together), EverGrace's gameplay mechanics were straight to the point. Monsters dropped "palmira" (and sometimes gear) which was used to buy, upgrade, and maintain both you and your arsenal.

FromSoftware took a new direction with EverGrace using a third-person view and a much more forgiving approach from their King's Field series. There were no levels: characters improved with gear and gear upgrades instead and players could switch between either protagonist.

EverGrace (2000) is an action RPG by FromSoftware for the Sony PlayStation 2. The Rieubane Empire is but an ancient legend, but somehow, Darius and Sharline find themselves there! When they try to seek answers, a hidden evil slowly takes an interest in their stories. (a fried egg beatdown thread)

Konami

For Fighting Game Friday, Konami's first 3D fighter, mostly forgotten, probably because it doesn't play particularly great.

BUT, it's got a *great* low-poly anime visual style with a lot of character.
