I love atoms and enjoy teaching organisms about atoms 😄 I'm also an avid gamer and fund-raise through Extra Life annually. I plan to post some fun physics stuff here but will probably have some auto notifications too like when I get donations or go live on Twitch. Let's grow!
Livestreaming and marathon gaming all day to raise funds for Boston Children's Hospital! Feel free to tune in and donate if you're feeling it- I have some fun incentives you can redeem including me getting slapped with a (shaving cream) pie 😄🥧

The school district tried an opt-out policy, but it became significantly disruptive and burdensome.

Regardless, schools are not your local babysitter- they prepare kids for public life; if you want totally control what YOUR children see, homeschool THEM.

As extremist as anti-evolutionists in Bio.
SCOTUS rules parents have a right to prevent their kids from reading books with LGBTQ+ characters - LGBTQ Nation
"Exposing students to the 'message' that LGBTQ people exist" over parental objections is now not allowed.

@pbsnews.org live fact checking is important:

Brooks: We have the IAEA... and they say it's completely destroyed

IAEA chief just 1 before: I don’t know. I think “destroyed” is going too far... it will clearly be harder for Iran to continue at the same pace

Has anyone had/taught a physics lab like this? Groups of 2 each use a big whiteboard as a "lab notebook" to report results/notes real-time, then after everyone can more easily see similarities/differences, discuss, and must(?) cite each other to qualify their own lab reports ⚛ #iteachphysics #edusky

A WELL-DESERVED CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating class- they have all overcome many challenges in their pursuit of knowledge, some in a hostile environment, and will go on to do great things!

Fuck the haters, even the ones in leadership positions; it is toxic and anti-social to behave this way.
one of the most insane normalized aspects of our political climate is politicians going after their own constituents in the name of anti-wokeness. what are we doing here

I see posts like "I won't file taxes, why should I pay with X going on?" but I'm pretty sure the vast majority of taxpayers are waged employees who have taxes auto-deducted from their paychecks; you ALREADY paid. Aside from being a crime, not filing taxes may just as easily LOSE your tax refund, no?

Abstract accepted- I'll be giving a talk at the Health Physics Society in Wisconsin this July on using interesting geometry techniques to rapidly accelerate simulations with radioactive particles for internal dosimetry! ⚛🧪 #academicsky #nukesky

Every single educator and academic institution that claims to care about their students' safety needs to be on high alert for these apparently blatantly illegal and fascistic tactics. This is an emergency and should be treated as such- communicate with students and develop an action plan, yesterday.
The footage of Rumeysa Ozturk’s arrest – a student here legally – is disturbing. My office is closely monitoring this matter as it develops.

A standing ovation for federal workers by the thousands of physicists who are meeting in Anaheim this week, supporting their colleagues in science agencies who couldn’t afford—or weren’t allowed—to come. Sorry, no pictures, in part out of green-card holders’ fears. #APSGlobalSummit2025 #APSMarch

#Math / #Physics folks, especially those good with geometry: I take a solid sphere and carve out a spherical cone. The cone radius may be as deep as the sphere's radius, but not necessarily (in case that changes anything).

What is the name of the REMAINING shape? Is this a "Spherical Frustum"? 🤔

I just had to turn off the AI feature of Notepad.

Notepad.

Even text file editors are not safe from AI creep. Maybe I'll just go back to the console for the warm embrace of Vim.

The cost-saving claims don’t hold up. Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity, research shows—a total of $93 billion in 2023 alone.

“It’s incredible to me that we would give up this thing that has such obvious societal benefits,” says biologist Mark Peifer.
America will pay dearly for the NIH’s mindless war on wokeness and DEI
Colleges, businesses, patients, students, workers, and US excellence will all suffer—and for what?

Quick summary: no city resources/property can be used for detaining persons for solely seeking/providing gender-affirming care, or for cooperating with individual/out-of-state agencies about the care.

We are so flooded with shocks that the resistance can fall under the radar. Which city is next?

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

I gotta limit my usage of FB to bookmarks instead of getting caught up in its front page nonsense. A top post just now tried to convince me that vegan milk had a ream of additives but "milk is milk 🙂".

Nah, I make oat milk from oats. No hormones, no viruses, no dairy subsidies. MUCH cheaper too. 🤷‍♂️

This is ghoulish- the protections are for the children, so this targets them. Schools are already reporting possible incidents, others are scrambling to make contingency plans for interactions. Sadly, some are preemptively affirming compliance. Educators, how do we protect our students?

The 2020 ICNIRP guidelines on RF exposure health effects had data gaps. This study investigated a priority set gaps related thermal/pain health effects and found no evidence for harm below current thresholds.

(Disclaimer- I am a Health Physics Society member though not involved with this study) 🧪
Posted today by Health Physics journal:
ICNIRP Statement on Gaps in RF Knowledge.
“For biological outcomes where effects have not been substantiated, we did not find sufficient plausible evidence that RF EMF might cause harm below currently established thresholds.”
