more than half of my life engaging with french books at this point and I don't think it will ever not be insane to me that the table of contents for books in french are at the end 🤦‍♀️

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

This is so cool. I interviewed Calvin Duncan - exoneree, and now Orleans Parish Clerk of Court - back in 2023 about his work as a jailhouse lawyer for the folks on death row in Louisiana. I remember being really struck by his words:

"Why don't people support welfare programs?"

Racism. More specifically, anti-Blackness.

White folks asked about who welfare serves overestimate the number of Black people on welfare. Not only that, but just the mere THOUGHT of who welfare supports led less white people to support it. #blacksky

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

That very MUNDANE action that you don't take because you are too busy fantasizing about being a superhero instead would actually DO something for someone. Your fantasy does not.

i'm teaching a caribbean ecologies class and we read a small place by jamaica kincaid. for the students mid-term, they had the option to write a new orleans version of a small place in essay or poetry form to think about how tourism and development impact the city and these are... soo good my god

Fascism is such a fundamental attack on wonder and the human imagination and I think everyone should have the opportunity to let their imagination wonder as it wanders — doesn’t matter what you do for a living. Your mind matters! Your relationship with the universe is meaningful!

gooo phee! may we all have this level of courage and clarity to stand up to exploitative and retaliatory employers. I need to go buy some unrivaled merch now.
Napheesa Collier's full statement at the beginning of her exit interview.

She directly quotes conversations with Cathy Englebert that legitimately call into question how the WNBA is being led. (Part 1/2) #WNBASky

After four seasons with the New York Liberty, head coach Sandy Brondello’s contract will not be renewed for the 2026 season.

She finishes her tenure in New York as the winningest coach in franchise history.

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read.

They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

This is must read. Extremely clear-eyed, morally grounded and powerful writing from Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Ta-Nehasi Coates is doing a lot of things with this essay, but one of the most important is fearlessly using examples of anti-trans hate to describe Charlie Kirk's politics.

The contrast between his choices and those of other writers for major legacy outlets is revealing.
Charlie Kirk, Redeemed: A Political Class Finds Its Lost Cause
By ignoring the rhetoric and actions of the Turning Point USA founder, pundits and politicians are sanitizing his legacy.

When I was placed on the Professor Watchlist in 2021, people sent death threats about my children. I had security officers monitor my 8yo at school.

Where is all the outrage for those of us who have been targeted for years? Where is the outrage for our families?

My own colleagues are silent.

I think it's terrible that Gen Z and Gen Alpha continue to live in a world where K-12 and college campus shootings are a normal part of life and that's all they've ever known and I think we should arrange things so that any kind of school or university shooting is impossible

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

The attempt to ban, erase etc.. marginalized people's histories demands responses at the grassroots level. Regular people can be cultural stewards, can be archivists, can be storytellers, can be preservers of oral history. And these are all fun things to do!
