It's a Linne's Cicada, originally for #invertober2024.

I fell off the Invertober train in 2024 when it got near the end. Started on this Linne's Cicada and could not finish the colour! So while I'm in a rut, decided to pick this one back up again to complete it.

According to wikipedia, the chemical compound 3-trans-caffeoyl-muco-quinic acid is important in the lifecyles of spicebush swallowtails like my bugsona.

Also wanna correct this ID to Arachnis dilecta!! The type locality was Teotihuacan, iNat suggests A. picta as the species but the locality doesn’t have any adults of that species seen. Instead it’s all A. dilecta, so my guess is this caterpillar actually belongs to that species

More bugs!!! Here’s a silly grub
A beetle larva resting on the palm of a hand. It has a mostly white body, with orange head and legs. The posterior half of the body curves inwards and develops a gray sheen to it. The same grub, but facing the opposite direction.

Now here’s an interesting bug! Ironclad beetles are known for having some of the sturdiest exoskeletons of any insect. They’re so so cool in many ways: these photos show them playing dead!
An ironclad beetle resting in the palm of a hand. It has a wide thorax and long elytra. The color is mostly light black, with marbled white borders at the edges of the thorax and elytra. The same beetle flipped upside down. It has the same uniformly black color, but is lined with light yellow stripes on its tergites and legs. Three more beetles of the same species resting among woodchips and soil. They bear an overall very similar appearance to the first beetle.

Back from my trip finally… gonna start posting bugs I saw now, starting with these two butterflies!

Happy new year!
A skipper butterfly perched on and surrounded by yellow grass. Its body is mostly very dark blue with white ringing the eyes; the wings are spread out, and are a base brown color with many white checker spots dotting the wings. A sideview of a small sulphur butterfly resting amidst pebbles. The body and hind wings are a dark yellow from shadow discolorating, but the forewings are illuminated by the sun showing a brighter yellow color with blackish broad edges. The forewing is slightly clipped.

1. Kentish glory moth.

No longer found in Kent, or indeed most other places in the UK. Now scarce and found only in Scotland, if I recall correctly.
Watercolour and pencil llustration of a big fluffy Kentish glory moth, or Endromis versicolora if you want the Latin. It's perched on bark, with its large white and red-brown speckled wings folded. It has a very fluffy body and black antennas and she looks majestic.
