Breaking my silence to share this summer fishfly I stumbled across :D I LOVE megalopterans and I’ve always wanted to see one in-person; it’s been dead for weeks in this spiderweb but I’m happy regardless
A large winged insect hanging from a spiderweb next to a window. The body is mostly varying shades of grey all over. The wings are exceptionally long with a pleated texture to them; one wing is hanging down perpendicular to the other wings and is damaged. The same insect with a finger for size comparison. Its wing is a little over twice the length of a fingernail. An angular view of the same insect. Its face is somewhat visible, revealing shiny grey damselfly-like eyes on the sides of the head, and an angular, boxy head shape.

Lil dragonfly I caught,,,
A dragonfly held by the wings. The dragonfly is mostly a sickly brown color with deep red eyes and a partly gray abdomen. What can be seen of the wings is a vivid orange.

Did some last minute bug catching,, noticed a scoliid wasp swarm and snagged a few!!!
A sideview of a scoliid wasp being held by its wings by a pair of fingers. The wasp is primarily black all over, with the exception of most of its abdomen, which is orange with a yellow spot. One of its antennae has been severed. The same wasp but freed from the grip and crawling onto the finger. The now exposed wings are a dark blueish to dark orange, and the edges are very slightly tattered.

I was demotivated to go for insects for a bit of this summer bc I had lost my special bug net, but I’ve got it back now!! Made a strong return by catching this cicada with it right away
A large cicada resting on a hand. It is mostly green, but has clear wings and a black thorax and abdomen. The boundary between the thorax and abdomen has two parallel white spots.

Been straggling on getting out much, but here’s a beetle :D
A lycid beetle resting on a hand. One side of the elytra/wings is spread out while the other side is folded. The colors of the elytra are split in half, orange anteriorally and boack posteriorally.

Haven’t updated on the ailanthus silkmoths in a bit; a couple males have emerged, and I finally got a mating pair between two captive moths! I’ll be closely watching the eggs for any caterpillars
Two large tan moths on window blinds. Along the forewings and hindwings are white and salmon colored stripes running diagonally down. Large yellow and white crescent shaped spots are also present on each wing. On the bodies are white spots and stripes running down the abdomens. The two moths are connected via their abdomens, indicating they are in the process of mating.

hiiiii!! <3 here's my revenge for this little piece
An anthropomorphic deaths head hawkmoth character with a somewhat goth style of clothing (orange and black striped with teared pants). The color is generally a dark blue across the body with some hints of yellow across the chest and especially the wings. He is sitting on a bed with an orange spiderweb pattern in a room lit by purple lighting, with a lava lamp and mothman posters in the back.

Tiger swallowtail sippies 🦋

(She’s sipping minerals)
A yellow swallowtail butterfly in a patch of dirt surrounded by grass. Down its ventral forewings are broad black stripes; thinner stripes are present on the body as well. The borders on the posterior end of the wings are black with shiny blue markings, with a forked tail on each hindwing.

The front shot of the same moth being quote reposted. Its legs are similarly colored to the rest of its body but have white outlines. Its head is light brown with dark brown eyes to the side. The antennae are plumose, but not very much as this moth is a female.

A small but long worm-like creature on a hand. It appears to have many leg-like tentacles on its side and it is a greenish brown color.

My Samia cynthia moths from last year have FINALLY started to emerge!!!
A large tan moth inside a mesh net. Along the forewings and hindwings are white and salmon colored stripes running diagonally down. Large yellow and white crescent shaped spots are also present on each wing. On the body are white spots and stripes running down.

Cuaght an eel while seining yesterday!
An eel in a net sparsly covered by algae. The eel is stuck at the bottom of the net and is a black color that turns lighter towards the underbelly. Its head and part of the body appears to be attempting to crawl up the net.

she’s very angry 2: dragonfly edition
A sideview of a dragonfly being held by a hand at its wings. It has a generally yellow body, but with brown blotches at the top of the thorax and black stripes at the abdomen. The eyes are orange-brown, and the legs are black. What is visible of the wings is generally clear, but the hindwings have a large black blotch near the base. The same dragonfly but perched on a bush at an angle from the camera. Its backside is now visible, revealing its full wings being clear aside from the black blotches and a white line running down the thorax and a small part of the abdomen.

A slender beetle in a butterfly net. The beetle is covered by a shadow, but has black legs, and orange elytra, with a black abdomen poking out from beneath. A black spot rests at the end of each elytron. A small slender fly resting on a hand. The fly has thin wings folded over its abdomen. Its body is mostly blavk except for red eyes and a white frons. Tiny antennae poke out in front of its face. A blurry photo of a crane fly on a window. It is missing its back four legs, but the remaining two are striped black and white. The wings are diagonal in typical crane fly fashion, but the body is a fuzzy white. A butterfly in a butterfly net. Its wing undersides are mottled light and dark browns, so as to give off the appearance of a dead leaf; the rest of the body is similarly brown. The head has a prolonged tuft of fuzz in front of it giving a “snout” appearance.

A small beetle on a leaf. The beetle has black legs, sterna, and long black antennae; the rest of the body (including the elytra) is red. On the terga and elytra are a few large, scattered black spots. An assassin bug on a somewhat round leaf. It is mostly green, but has light to dark brown hemelytra, and the head has a brownish tint to it as well. The antennae are long and thin, and spread out diagonally from the head. A harvestman on a few slightly pale leaves. I has a mostly pale orange body, however the legs, eyes, and pepipalps are entirely black. A firefly on a hand viewed from the side. The firefly appears mostly black except the thorax which has a broad black stripe in the middle, but has faint red to yellow borders. The antennae are somewhat long and serrate.

Been seeing a lack of many large charismatic insects so I caught a grasshopper with my bare hands

A grasshopper sitting on the edge of the palm of a hand and the middle and pointer fingers. The grasshopper appears mostly vivid green, with the eyes, antennae and tegmina being a light brown.

Yay, #WorldSwallowtailDay! My absolute favorite family of butterflies (and insects in general), I still haven’t seen any this year sadly but I’d like to post some old photos of some swallowtails 🦋
A black butterfly in a mesh met cage. White spots run down its body from head to posterior abdomen. Broken up white borders line the ventral hindwing and forewing. On the hindwing, from the border inwards is a row of orange spots, then metallic blue and green splotches, and then another row of orange spots. A yellow swallowtail butterfly in a mesh cage. A broad black line runs down the thorax and abdomen. Four large black spike-like stripes are present on the dorsal forewing. On the border of the forewing and hindwing is a very very broad black border; within is a row of yellow and orange spots followed inward by broad dark blue blotches. A yellow swallowtail butterfly on a plant with small pink flowers. The butterfly appears similar to the prior butterfly, only the most inward black stripe on the wings extends all the way down the hindwings. The butterfly also appears to have multiple pairs of wing “tails” instead of just one pair. A black butterfly on a leaf within somewhat dense foliage. It is mostly monocolor; the exceptions are six small pink spots on the head (on the dorsal side, not laterally). On the hindwings seven pairs of much larger pink spots are visible; other spots are obscured by the pure black forewings.

A newly hatched spicebush swallowtail caterpillar in a leaf. The caterpillar is mostly brown with a few pale markings. The caterpillar has spun a silk base beneath it causing a small fragment of the leaf to wrap around it in a taco shape. Fingers are beneath the leaf holding it up to show the caterpillars

Trying to get back into art urmmm have a practice headshot of the butterfly
