Interior of an old homesteader shack at the Goshen County Homesteaders Museum in Torrington, Wyoming. Text from the historical designation marker describes the shack as follows: This is an ORIGINAL HOMESTEAD SHACK built in 1909 about 28 miles south of Torrington on land which is now near the center of Hawk Spring Irrigation Reservoir. The house is 12' 7" x 12' 6" square and was home for the Trouts for 13 years. Here they raised their 3 children. The floor was originally packed dirt covered with a rug or two. The oldest 2 children slept on the floor. Mama, Papa & baby slept in the ¾ bed. It was as hot in the summer as it was cold in the winter. After the Trouts built a larger house this shack was used as a milk house and the wooden floor was added. Mice and snakes were a common problem. Dust and dirt from plowed ground and Wyoming's ever present winds covered everything in grit.

The Scotts Bluff National Monument, named after our very own #Postie, @rescuerofcritters.bsky.social. Just kidding. It was named after Hiram Scott, a young fur trader who died in this area in the 1820s. Alt-Text for info.

A panoramic view of the Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska. The area was on the routes of the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, as well as the Pony Express. The rock formation was named after Hiram Scott, a young fur trader who died in this area in the 1820s. Accounts vary on cause and manner of death, but many attribute his demise to abandonment by his fellow travelers. The monument designation was made in 1919 (President Wilson) The park later expanded in the 1930s and construction of a roadway to the summit was a Civilian Conservation Corps project (President Roosevelt).
