An ancient ritual that forms bonds between friends and newcomers, enlarging the quilt of many colors with stitches of commonality and empathy. Keep sharing your stories with loved ones or the stranger on the path. You never know how you may impact another life by speaking as well as listening with open ears. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a world to itself. A large finger of land surrounded by water, on the edge of the continent. Many people drive Rt 13 as a north south highway to other destinations, but if you take the side roads you’ll find wonderful places & authentic living.

I read two books this week:

• Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese (2009)

• Flesh, by David Szalay (2025) 🥇

I am just starting

•The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and his Mother), by Rabih Alameddine 🥇 🥇

🥇- Award Winners
• Cutting For Stone is an epic, compelling, fictional story. It is primarily about developing surgeons in Ethiopia in the second half of the 20th century. I was a bit overwhelmed by the anatomical and medical detail, but that is in part its point. The story held together beautifully from beginning to end. I’d rate it 4 out of 5 stars. (On a personal note, the story revolved around two identical twins. I dated an identical twin in college. The story had some appropriately squirmy moments for me. 🤦🏼‍♀️ ) • Flesh is also fiction, the story of one man’s rise from a childhood in Hungary through the trajectory of his life to riches in an “ever globalizing Europe”. Its cadence is spare to the point of bare; another quick read Booker Award 🥇 winner. I’d skip this, but I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. It’s not a book you’ll quickly forget, though it can easily be read in a day. •The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and his Mother) is supposed to be charming. We’ll see. It did win the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the National Book Award. (50 pages in, it has yet to win me over…. 🤷🏼‍♀️ ) P.S. I’m looking for uplifting literature these days! Please let me know what you find out there! 🤩

If you hadn’t noticed I don’t follow a lot of people back as I am not on social media as much anymore. For the first time in my life I have real life friends I can hang out with who don’t just tolerate me or make fun of me when I am not around. They get me and don’t care that I am autistic. 1/2

A lovely cedar bench at the lighthouse made by Peter Pulman, lighthouse volunteer since 2000. He has his date of birth, 2-28-36 and a space for his date of death. It brings to mind the importance of a life giving to others.
The trio of gracious diners at the restaurant NYE were the same ~ cont ⬇️
Of course it was fully crowded, Bill’s is superb dining in a small town on a small island. I came in at 7:30 to check in and they were there waiting on a table. Chris, the man, when he heard I was a party of one, spoke up and said join us, it’ll make a table of four and Linda and Jan both said of course please join us. So the hostess said P M to join your table for four and we were seated at the perfect table by the window with lots of room. We introduced ourselves and placed drinks and appetizers orders. Chris, a scientist, lived in Va Beach. Jan, a restaurant kitchen designer, lived on the Eastern Shore and Linda, lived in Onancock, I don’t think said what she did for a living, but she ended up paying for the table, even though it was a hefty tab! She said she could easily afford it and wanted to give us an evening to start the new year. Her gracious spirit was her mode of living. I found her so beautiful, especially convivial to me, a stranger minutes earlier. The conversation was flowing with such ease we could have been friends forever. No awkward moments. It was a gift that came on wings. Jan and myself were the old ones with Chris and Linda just dipping their toes into becoming old. Jan on a new life path, Chris and Linda newly in love and me, well, I suppose I’m on some kind of path. None of us had children. We were all looking forward to changing things up creatively though, which made for very spirited conversations about making art, traveling, learning! This wonderful trio of friends invited a stranger to join them and it was pure kismet. An evening I’ll never forget. We made our way out to the sidewalk, vowed to seek new creative directions, hugged and went our separate ways. You never know what surprises you might encounter but sometimes you find the rainbow. I hope we come into this new year with open arms and hearts, because it’s the best gift of all. p m gibbs 1-2-26
