The image shows a calm mountain lake at dawn. The water is very still, acting like a mirror. Dark mountain slopes rise on both the left and right sides, forming a wide valley that narrows toward the center of the image. The mountains are layered, with closer slopes appearing darker and farther ridges fading into softer blue tones. The lake fills the lower half of the image. Because the surface is smooth, it reflects the sky, clouds, and mountain shapes almost perfectly, creating a symmetrical scene where the top and bottom halves closely resemble each other. Above the mountains, the sky is filled with scattered clouds. The clouds are soft and uneven, tinted with pale blues, grays, and warm hints of peach and gold from the rising sun. A lovely cedar bench at the lighthouse made by Peter Pulman, lighthouse volunteer since 2000. He has his date of birth, 2-28-36 and a space for his date of death. It brings to mind the importance of a life giving to others.
The trio of gracious diners at the restaurant NYE were the same ~ cont ⬇️
Of course it was fully crowded, Bill’s is superb dining in a small town on a small island. I came in at 7:30 to check in and they were there waiting on a table. Chris, the man, when he heard I was a party of one, spoke up and said join us, it’ll make a table of four and Linda and Jan both said of course please join us. So the hostess said P M to join your table for four and we were seated at the perfect table by the window with lots of room. We introduced ourselves and placed drinks and appetizers orders. Chris, a scientist, lived in Va Beach. Jan, a restaurant kitchen designer, lived on the Eastern Shore and Linda, lived in Onancock, I don’t think said what she did for a living, but she ended up paying for the table, even though it was a hefty tab! She said she could easily afford it and wanted to give us an evening to start the new year. Her gracious spirit was her mode of living. I found her so beautiful, especially convivial to me, a stranger minutes earlier. The conversation was flowing with such ease we could have been friends forever. No awkward moments. It was a gift that came on wings. Jan and myself were the old ones with Chris and Linda just dipping their toes into becoming old. Jan on a new life path, Chris and Linda newly in love and me, well, I suppose I’m on some kind of path. None of us had children. We were all looking forward to changing things up creatively though, which made for very spirited conversations about making art, traveling, learning! This wonderful trio of friends invited a stranger to join them and it was pure kismet. An evening I’ll never forget. We made our way out to the sidewalk, vowed to seek new creative directions, hugged and went our separate ways. You never know what surprises you might encounter but sometimes you find the rainbow. I hope we come into this new year with open arms and hearts, because it’s the best gift of all. p m gibbs 1-2-26
