Just a prokopton in Fairbanks, Alaska. Beginning homesteader.

"To make the best of what lies in our power, and deal with everything else as it comes."

I have 12 acres til the bank wants it back, so I'm going to work on making the most of that.
My folks and uncle and I all enjoyed the Pelican Brief last night so tonight we watched A Time To Kill.

Erm.

My stepmom was talking about how a nice man in a waiting room gave her a guitar so I said something about needing to check if my neighbor ever found me a mandolin and it turned out SHE HAD ONE in a closet she never got around to restringing and she even had the new strings for it and now

My perhaps controversial assessment is that when you share the propaganda of your enemies to call it out or to mock it… you’re still spreading their propaganda and maybe doing exactly what they hope you’ll do.

The empire is collapsing, but I made myself a sweet hat. I watched some ted talk last night about how we all need to make art right now. I'm not exactly sold on that as the solution but I'll wear the magnificent hat just in case.

Kinda seems like they might just not restart the government? I read a lot of speculative fiction back before having a child and always kind of expected to outlive the US government kind of Snow Crash style but living through the obvious collapse into kleptocracy is something else eh.

Find a No Kings protest Saturday and go!

Don't worry that you've never been to a protest before. Don't worry about being dressed wrong or looking out of place. Don't worry that you don't agree about everything -- or even about much -- with lots of people at the protest.

Plan is to make 5 gallons of chicken corn chowder for No Kings Day. I'm going to roast 4 chickens on friday and shred them all for soup and then boil the bones for broth and then also dump a whole costco bag-o-corn in there at some point so what I'm saying is I hope you come by and get some soup 🙌

When I was 26 my daughter's daycare begged me to join the board cause they needed more members and it was fine if i had no experience. I wanted to help. At the first meeting I attended the director announced she was quiting and also we were a year behind payroll taxes. I think I'm still traumatized.

Vaccines have some amount of risk and I accept this much the same way I put my beautiful amazing child who trusts me implicitly into a goddam motor vehicle almost every single day and do a much more statistically dangerous thing, and often for utterly frivolous reasons.

There is a gulf in America. I submit it is the gulf between good and evil, or at least not-evil and evil.

The gulf is not just between people who oppose this and people who are indifferent to it or reluctantly accept it in support of immigration policy or see it as collateral damage.

This raid is disgusting, abominable behavior, traumatizing children and families in their homes.

It's just full on banana republic out there, isn't it.

But also, finally, a good afternoon to pick up the yard.

Thanks @carrieinfbx.bsky.social for posting this one. An out of state newspaper conglomerate caved to political pressure and lost virtually its entire editorial and reporting staff from all three publications it owns in Alaska. It hurts to see good people out of work, but they stood for the truth.

A thing to keep in mind about over half of internet traffic being bots now is that all this manufactured content designed to stoke engagement and make people outraged isn't in fact constrained to things you disagree with.

Building and maintaining the garden is a school and community-wide effort. Teachers incorporate the garden into the curriculum: students might try their hand at scientific illustrations or calculate the volume of a garden bed to find out how much soil it needs.

I read "out of my later years" by Einstein when I was 22 or so, while living in a tent and building an earthbag cabin. Absolutely sobbed several times over the persistence of so many problems over so many decades. That is also when I stopped being a Libertarian.
"There is a separation of white people and colored people in the United States. That separation is not a disease of colored people. It is a disease of white people. I do not intend to be quiet about it."

I enjoy watching these come across my feed and just wondering why and how the fuck Alaska is playing all these penny stocks and if maybe that has anything to do with us being broke. It's probably mostly the oil lobby, I know, but still. Wtf.

The little tik tok logo and sound effect at the end of every video of like, the gestapo trying to arrest a nurse or zip tie an old lady or whatever.... I don't know man, there is a certain level of cynicism or something here that I am struggling to corroborate with reality.
