“As the rhetoric demonizing people outside our borders grows more heated, those who do not want to outsource our thinking to politicians should try to put ourselves in new places, take ourselves on new adventures, and meet the people with whom we share this rock.”

– Bekah Congdon
It’s been a frustrating day. And suddenly one act of kindness from a complete stranger. And now we can’t wipe the smiles from our faces.

Despite the madness in our country right now, I still believe most people in this world are kind. I’ve seen it too many times to believe otherwise.

The spouse called me a fussy old man as if I’d take this as gentle but firm criticism and not as I actually did which was to express pride in the fact.

Alaska Natives, whose needs that are driven by climate change have never been addressed to the extent necessary, have now been fully abandoned by our government.
Alaska Native villages have few options and little US help as climate change devours their land
Storms that battered Alaska’s western coast this fall have brought renewed attention to low-lying Indigenous villages left increasingly vulnerable by climate change.

You will rarely hear me advocate for legal prohibitions on freedom of expression, but if you’re going to record a cover of any song Stevie Nicks sang the original vocals on you should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There are things in this world that are just plain wrong.

Eleven injured, two critically, most of them children. It happened on First Nations land in British Columbia. Bears almost never go after large groups. The circumstances that caused this bear to do so are, I suspect, unknown at present. It remains loose. Hopefully they'll locate it. Terrifying.

NANA must not make white supremacy an Iñupiaq value
To the editor: NANA Regional Corporation and its subsidiary, Akima, have been in the news many times this year for allegations of human rights violations.

People are understandably and justifiably enraged that Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited the White House today. Note that previous visitors have included the Shah of Iran (6 times), Anastasio Somoza (3), Suharto (3), and Augusto Pinochet (1) among others. Unfortunately this isn’t new.

The book On Bullshit by philosopher Harry Frankfurt explains how liars care about the truth because they don’t want you to know it. Bullshitters don’t care about the truth or that you know they’re just making stuff up. Truth is irrelevant. He called it more dangerous than lies.

For thirty years I've carried a curse. Whenever I have a plumbing problem, two more immediately follow on it's heels. They always come in threes. It never fails. The spouse says I'm superstitious, but I have three decades of unbroken data. But even by that standard, this time was a doozy.
