I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

Maybe instead of fixating on the price of eggs, politicians should have been strategizing how to address H5N1 to maintain the supply of eggs. Wonder what happens to the price of eggs when the shelves are empty.

There is a genre of tweet on this site that is just re-writing the sentence “Remember, the people you don’t like are bad people and you’re a good person for hating them” and it always gets over 10,000 likes but then this person gets 10 likes on their amazing nudibranch and I do worry about us…

As we gather to celebrate thanksgiving, let's try to be mindful of protecting our own health, and the health of those with weakened or undeveloped immune systems.
This is a great article about the state of affairs going into the holiday season.

Newborn hearing screening is crucial for early detection of hearing loss, which affects 1-3 out of every 1,000 babies in the U.S. Early intervention can improve speech, language, and social development. Let’s give every child the chance to thrive!

Every year, >200K newborns die from sepsis.
Our team used machine learning to develop a set of genes that can predict neonatal sepsis risk using at birth blood samples.

Despite appearing healthy at birth, neonates who later developed EOS already had distinct whole blood gene expression changes at birth, which enabled the development of a 4-gene predictive signature f...

this is depressing. what a sad world we live in.
After falling for decades, the childhood mortality rate has started to rise.

What’s killing kids? Trauma, drugs and firearms.

My view of the world changed when I learned how to interpret statistics and probability in my early 30s... This is what separates data-driven science from personal intuition. Imagine how today's children could see the world if we teach them how to read and understand statistics at a younger age.

Very bad news late last week from CDC about maternal mortality in the USA - it continues to go up. The leading cause of death for #pregnant people in 2020 and 2021 was infectious diseases, especially #COVID.

I don't care what restroom you use as long as you wash your hands.

However, why can't we have European public restrooms with closets and actual privacy?

(For that matter, why can't we have European high speed rail, public transit, and universal health care too?)
