This is extremely bad: “expect placement by political appointees.”

This is Lysenkoism, politics controlling science, and we know how it ends: with the death of science.

“For successful science, reality must take precedence over politics, for Nature cannot be fooled.”
NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

Thank you, I hadn't appreciated this distinction. I just looked at the One Big Bill from the House; no mention of NIH or NSF. So, science funding will be voted on later this summer. That's great and gives us just a little more time to advocate and get the word out to the public and congress. 📢

The Prospect article in the first post notes that NIH cuts are "a sleeper issue" in the bill.

Future cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, chronic diseases, and the next pandemic should not be a "sleeper issue". Workforce for pharma and biotech should not be a sleeper issue.

Time to wake people up!

So far even NPR isn't highlighting the major cuts to research funding at NIH and NSF. It was completely left out of this otherwise highly informative rundown of what is in the bill. @elenamoore.bsky.social maybe you could add it? These cuts will have tremendous impact. www.npr.org/2025/06/28/g...

It seems that only the science community is noticing that NIH and NSF budgets are cut 40% and 55% in the budget bill, respectively. If you live in Maine, West Va, Pennsylvania, Alabama, or Louisiana, CALL YOUR SENATOR as they could make a difference. See below.

The Trump admin wants to cut the NSF's budget by 57%.

In terms of directorates, EDU and ENG would see the biggest cuts at 75%, while MPS is looking at a ~67% cut. The proposal also defunds nearly all postdoc programs and slashes the NSF GRFP budget by 55%.
