Western excess is going to end voluntarily or as a result of polycrisis. There's no political or cultural power strong enough to keep the gravy train flowing and it'd be nice to see more politicians begin to get serious about redistributive degrowth.

i guess the other thing to note about this, is it reveals somewhat the extent to which powerful people avoid paper trails so that there is less transparency and accountability. what else gets treated in this way?

One of the greatest indictments of Ardern's political project is how she's distanced herself from NZ politics despite leveraging her time as prime minister for increasingly vast personal gain and to grow recognition abroad. I do love (hate) that the 90s have been so totally memory holed beyond Ruthanasia in NZ. The misery inflicted on people was terrible sure but there are like a dozen people with names and address who made dozens of millions from that misery who live happy lives lmao.

It's legitimately shocking how few people have even a passing understanding of the second world war. There's not really any excuse esp given even western history from the 1990s has generally been more balanced (noteworthy exceptions such as Beevor).
