This pretty closely tracks national statistics, although the employers might differ state to state.

Work requirements for SNAP recipients are political nonsense anyway. Less than 45% of recipients are over 18 and under 60.

Basically, blame employers for not paying a living wage.
The Boston Globe identified the companies in Massachusetts that employ the most SNAP recipients. A key stat: "In Massachusetts, 74% of working-age recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are employed, half of them full-time."

Look, every single “deal” reached by a university with the Trump administration is a moral stain that will be seen with deep embarrassment once we’re through this. But for Northwestern to do this now, when the administration is visibly weakened, is even more shameful and inexcusable.

This is one advantage of having the historical memory of authoritarianism, as I have from Brazil: you know that, when the regime is gone, the people who collaborated and acquiesced look terrible in retrospect. It may look reasonable and justifiable now, but believe me, it will age like milk.

Northwestern and Columbia being famous for journalism and bending over for Trump seems a little too on the nose these days
This is the second largest payout from a private university to the Trump admin yet, second only to Columbia’s $200m

Every time an American institution/law firm capitulates, it gives Trump life and further corrupts his rotting administration.
There are no terse excuses for moral cowardice, gullibility, and breach of fiduciary duty.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

This is my surprised face.
"Hacked materials from....the Heritage Foundation show that applicants to a Project 2025-branded effort to create a talent pool for the Trump administration cited the influence of Nazi political theorists and other far-right thinkers on their political views."

I’m not saying anything particularly smart or new here: A press that runs on sensationalism is just a rolled out red carpet waiting for any fascist weirdo who prints money for “both sides” by saying and doing crazy things all day.
there's no way to explain our politics without the media being overwhelmingly complicit
Now only did White House pool reporters not stick up for their colleague who Trump repeatedly called “stupid” but you can hear them thanking Trump a few minutes later after he ended the Q&A. Sad stuff.

Great idea. Along with an invitation to go do something else if they can't do their jobs as reporters
Can someone show the White House Press Corpse a montage of the reporters who covered previous administrations, the ones who weren't complete cowards?

This hurts my brain. Using something that works is somehow wrong?
If a phone still works fine, it’s not “device hoarding” to keep using it. It’s common sense.

TIL moment. Maybe you too would like to read about a writer who could say this in the 1990s, when other writers were promoting a very different and inaccutate view of Silicon Valley: "...these technolibertarians make a philosophy out of a personality defect.“

Clearly prescient.
1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that
