Happy to say that mine and Nelson Sherren's book, Their Sturdy Pride, is now available! Explore Nelson's history of RCAF Torbay (now #YYT), the archaeology of two #Newfoundland crash sites, and both of our work searching for the Oiseau Blanc on the Cape shore. #aviation

I could certainly see this. I won't buy a pair of shoes until I'm sure I can do at least and underarm turn in them. Might even practice some bigger turns if @shannonkgreen.bsky.social is with me.
On that note, registration for Ballroom Dance classes start soon with the City of St. John's, NL.

Harmon Field Aerodrome: It is from this location, in Newfoundland, where the airplanes and ground teams left to aid victims of the aviation accident that cost 39 people their lives in Stephenville, Newfoundland, a couple of days ago. Sadly all of the crew and passengers died before help arrived.

Youth Heritage Report 2025 Released
Young people in Newfoundland and Labrador are seeking greater professional-level employment opportunities in the heritage and cultural industries, according to a newly-released report. The study, co-authored by Heritage NL, the Association of NL Archives, and the Museum Association of NL, is based on a series of surveys, a youth-centred forum held in March of 2025, and suggestions from the province’s new Youth Heritage Committee.

I'm turning this presentation into a paper to be published this winter. Details soon.
The presentation about fire in St John's referenced below can be found in the current issue of NQ (Newfoundland Quarterly) as the @nlhistorical.bsky.social Aspects article. It's a great read.
Had a good session at @can-arch.bsky.social this morning, but had to rush home to help with a broken bathroom pipe.
The other presentations on Beothuk archaeology, fires and evidence for prostitution in St. John's, and an accidentally cemetery disturbance were all amazing. Great work being done.

I found some writings regarding the Oiseau blanc and the search for Nungesser and Coli in Newfoundland. This map shows the ships that were asked to ask at every coastal stop about any sightings or information about the missing aviators (routes are the coloured markings).

Throwback to when I worked at the The Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Museum, a community museum in NL, and wrote this article for their (now defunct) blog. I also included it on my own blog, which was lucky because it means I still have a copy of it to share!

I just realized that filming for Land and Sea's Fallen War Birds episode, and filming for 39-45 en sol canadien's L’invasion amicale de Terre-Neuve episode last year happened just about a decade apart!
Both are available online, links below!

That great feeling when you finish a draft paper to send for the first round of editing. In the next couple of years, I'll see this latest paper published with some other great aeronautical archaeologists.
Next project, turning my recent conference paper into an article.

Great news! The Amelia Earhart statue in Harbour Grace will be replaced. Pam Parsons, MHA for the district, made the announcement.
Also note, Earhart is one of three (soon four) statues that represent named women in the province, another reason to replace the statue.

Hopefully the statue is found and repaired so it can continue to be a favourite roadside attraction. It is a great monument to all of the flights out of Harbour Grace in the 1920s and 1930s.
Amelia Earhart Statue (Harbour Grace, NL):

Known as the Spirit of Harbour Grace, the statue honours Earhart who left from Harbour Grace on May 20, 1932 to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. The plane behind the statue was built in 1943.
(I'm aware the statue was stolen last week).

On this day 100 years ago, women of Newfoundland, then a Dominion of Britain (now Newfoundlandand Labrador, Canada) fought for and won the right to vote and hold public office.

This winter, I have learned to use a sewing machine! Thanks @shannonkgreen.bsky.social for the classes. While I won't have it ready for this tourism season, I had to buy this lighthouse fabric to make something for next season. (I work at the lighthouse that is most visible).

All of our dance classes are over until the fall. I love teaching, but the break is nice. By the time August rolls around, I'll be excited for dance to start up again!
In the meantime, I'm sure we'll find a dance floor or two over the summer! And maybe learn some new steps to share with our students

A nice interview about the designation of Father Green's House (the Priest's House) at Port au Port West, Felix Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. The associated church turns 100 this year, and is also a provincially designated building recognized by Heritage NL.
