Young people in Newfoundland and Labrador are seeking greater professional-level employment opportunities in the heritage and cultural industries, according to a newly-released report. The study, co-authored by Heritage NL, the Association of NL Archives, and the Museum Association of NL, is based on a series of surveys, a youth-centred forum held in March of 2025, and suggestions from the province’s new Youth Heritage Committee.

Feedback from the Youth Heritage Forum has inspired further collaboration between heritage organizations, Heritage NL, ANLA, and MANL, with the formation of Working in Heritage, Archives, and Museums, or WHAM! This new partnership is dedicated to raising professional standards and skills in the exciting and diverse heritage fields in Newfoundland and Labrador, and sharing workshop and training opportunities. The first WHAM!

In partnership with MANL and ANLA, Heritage NL is excited to announce the upcoming Virtual Heritage Job Fair. This event is an opportunity for our members to share their employment opportunities with a group of prospective employees. For students, it is a great way to see what heritage jobs are available across the province in one place and possibly to connect with employers.

Heritage NL is excited to announce another speaker for the Youth Heritage Forum, storyteller Amena Harlick-Shaw. From the vibrant downtown St. John's, Amena Harlick-Shaw is an emerging Inuit artist with family ties to Nain, Nunatsiavut. Over the past four years, Amena has embarked on a creative journey that celebrates her rich heritage and the beauty of Inuit culture. Inspired by the stories and landscapes of her ancestors, Amena blends traditional elements with contemporary influences, creating a unique artistic expression that resonates with audiences.

Pascale started working for Parks Canada as a student over 10 years ago while she was studying History and Anthropology at McGill University. Pascale has since worked for Parks Canada at eight sites across three provinces, mostly focused in the fields of visitor experience, heritage interpretation, and operational management.

Excited for our upcoming Round-table with Heritage Employers? Meet one of our panelists, Megan Webb! Megan (she/her) is the Museum Manager at Admiralty House Communications Museum in Mount Pearl. She holds a both a Bachelors degree in Archaeology and a Masters degree in Folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Megan has over a decade of experience working in the heritage industry through archaeology, archives, museums, folklore, and built heritage.

With a little over two weeks until the 2025 Youth Heritage Forum, Heritage NL is excited to highlight another great workshop that is part of the upcoming forum. This workshop, taught by NLPL Adult Program Coordinator Julia Mayo and MANL’s Anne Madden, is an introduction to public programming in library and heritage spaces. Focusing on heritage interpretation techniques and library programming, this workshop will show how public programming is a community-building tool and a resource for lifelong learning.

The next event for the Youth Heritage Forum we are excited to unveil is our "Heritage is my Business" panel, which will feature several heritage entrepreneurs from across the province! Learn more about the experiences of several heritage entrepreneurs and ask them your questions about starting your own heritage business.
