The Trump Administration has not shown that there was an immediate threat that required acting without Congress, and it has not explained how it will keep Venezuela from sliding into chaos, violence, or a dangerous power vacuum. Secretaries Hegseth and Rubio recently told Congress this was not about forcing political change, but the Administration’s actions prove that they lied. “This is not a careful national security decision. It is a major escalation that puts Americans in Venezuela and across the region at risk and could drag the United States into another conflict without a plan or public support. It also sets an alarming international precedent by normalizing the use of U.S. force to remove foreign leaders. The Administration must brief Congress immediately on the legal basis for this action, what intelligence they relied on, how they plan to prevent further violence and protect civilians, and what they will do to avoid wider instability in the region.”

That’s why I will never be able to overlook anyone who fluffed these doctors or mocked those of us who desperately tried to sound the alarm bells about them.

It exposes that much of the world has been cowed.

Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

I won't hesitate to post my opinions, but also write about reality as I see it. I am going to emphasize again - protest is the Iranian people's right. There's no ifs or buts. I'll go further than that. The choice of what type of government Iranians want is their right. And it is the right of every generation to make that decision. I don't care what Trump or Netenyahu or someone else says. To hell with them. That's irrelevant noise. For people to try to infantilize that choice based on some convoluted analysis of what country is going to take over the Middle East at this particular point in time is wrong. I'm sorry. Protesting is Iranians right. Full stop. That having been said, what I see: - The general sentiment on social media does not match what I see on the ground. The extent & intensity of protests is still less than what was seen during WLF & Aban 98 (though it does exceed other protest waves between these, like the water protests in Khuzestan & as such would qualify as a 'major' wave). I see people posting maps of number of cities where there's protests. But the comparisons are not the same. I finally saw a video from the city I come from (and btw the people there chanted a clear pro-monarchy slogan & had our distinct accent - it definitely wasn't fake). There were less than 10 people there. They were burning some trash. The area was clearly on the outskirts of the city. To me, who is familiar with that city, it was pretty trivial. I wouldn't consider it in the same category as videos I've seen in Hamedan or other places. Yet on that map, you'd see a dot. I would make a distinction between "city where there is any sort of protest" (pretty big), "city where there is a protest of more than 50 people multiple nights in a row" (smaller), "city where with large protest where there are violent clashes with security services" (even smaller). In all three categories, we are not at the same level as the earlier major waves of protests. The most violent and intense clashes (category 3) continue to be in specific smaller cities that have longstanding grievances of being neglected. The idea that the security forces are in any way overwhelmed or that the country is at a tipping point is very very premature. We're not anywhere close to that. Having a basij station or howze be attacked in a smaller city isn't some historically unprecedented event. In the first month of WLF you had this happening in multiple cities almost daily. It's unclear if the snowball is getting bigger or not. But it's still fairly small. It might get bigger. I'm not saying it's impossible. But we've been down this path before - and far further - and the ultimate result was not (and not close to) the overthrow of the government, a civil war, or anything like that. - I did see a few videos of Narmak from tonight. But all in all we aren't seeing mass protests of people in Tehran during the day anymore (as of now). The pictures and videos I saw of the roads to Shomal for the long weekend were pretty crowded. And tomorrow is 13 Rajab/Father's Day which is also a holiday. The majority of people are going about their day to day life.
