Nothing is wilder than watching US pundits on many sides of the aisle argue about whether Trump got the right permissions to invade another nation, instead of, you know, whether any part of the US government should be allowed to once again invade a nation based on US preferences.

Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

I won't hesitate to post my opinions, but also write about reality as I see it. I am going to emphasize again - protest is the Iranian people's right. There's no ifs or buts. I'll go further than that. The choice of what type of government Iranians want is their right. And it is the right of every generation to make that decision. I don't care what Trump or Netenyahu or someone else says. To hell with them. That's irrelevant noise. For people to try to infantilize that choice based on some convoluted analysis of what country is going to take over the Middle East at this particular point in time is wrong. I'm sorry. Protesting is Iranians right. Full stop. That having been said, what I see: - The general sentiment on social media does not match what I see on the ground. The extent & intensity of protests is still less than what was seen during WLF & Aban 98 (though it does exceed other protest waves between these, like the water protests in Khuzestan & as such would qualify as a 'major' wave). I see people posting maps of number of cities where there's protests. But the comparisons are not the same. I finally saw a video from the city I come from (and btw the people there chanted a clear pro-monarchy slogan & had our distinct accent - it definitely wasn't fake). There were less than 10 people there. They were burning some trash. The area was clearly on the outskirts of the city. To me, who is familiar with that city, it was pretty trivial. I wouldn't consider it in the same category as videos I've seen in Hamedan or other places. Yet on that map, you'd see a dot. I would make a distinction between "city where there is any sort of protest" (pretty big), "city where there is a protest of more than 50 people multiple nights in a row" (smaller), "city where with large protest where there are violent clashes with security services" (even smaller). In all three categories, we are not at the same level as the earlier major waves of protests. The most violent and intense clashes (category 3) continue to be in specific smaller cities that have longstanding grievances of being neglected. The idea that the security forces are in any way overwhelmed or that the country is at a tipping point is very very premature. We're not anywhere close to that. Having a basij station or howze be attacked in a smaller city isn't some historically unprecedented event. In the first month of WLF you had this happening in multiple cities almost daily. It's unclear if the snowball is getting bigger or not. But it's still fairly small. It might get bigger. I'm not saying it's impossible. But we've been down this path before - and far further - and the ultimate result was not (and not close to) the overthrow of the government, a civil war, or anything like that. - I did see a few videos of Narmak from tonight. But all in all we aren't seeing mass protests of people in Tehran during the day anymore (as of now). The pictures and videos I saw of the roads to Shomal for the long weekend were pretty crowded. And tomorrow is 13 Rajab/Father's Day which is also a holiday. The majority of people are going about their day to day life.

Bodies are being reburied in formal cemeteries, often with bones removed for DNA testing in case families are still searching for missing relatives. Many of the dead remain unidentified. The process is expected to take months and underscores how the true death toll remains unknowable, the report finds, with some estimates suggesting more than 60,000 people may have died in Khartoum State alone during the early phase of the war, and the total deaths possibly exceeding 200,000. The report also describes the Rapid Support Forces’ occupation of the capital, writing: “In Khartoum, every lock has been broken. An entire capital stood by, powerless, as the heist of the century unfolded. To organize its methodical hold-up, the RSF first looted cars and banks. Then, sounding the fazaa – an appeal to war – a swarm of young soldiers, recruited from marginalized communities in the west of the country and the Sahelian strip, came to fight for the ghanaim: women, jewelry and dollars.” Stolen gold and valuables were funneled through RSF-run markets and smuggled across borders. My 80-year-old Sicilian friend, a child of immigrants who was a Mamdani supporter from "day one," was APPALLED that Gillibrand, Schumer and Jeffries were not there.

Still, she was moved to tears, several times, and we had a grand time deconstructing the ceremony on the phone.

After breaking the ceasefire in March 2025, Israeli officials openly signaled an expansion of assassination policy beyond fighters. American surgeon Dr. Feroze Sidhwa told Drop Site that demanding staff lists under these conditions amounts to asking NGOs to hand over details of people to be killed. If Israel wants organizations to share names, he said, it should stop targeting and killing humanitarian workers. Israel’s Foreign Ministry now claims the ban is justified by alleged mistreatment of Israeli captives by an unnamed doctor in Gaza. No publicly available evidence has been produced to substantiate the claim. Putting that aside, using an unverified allegation to bar Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam, the IRC, and dozens of other aid groups only makes sense if Israel is preparing for more of its citizens to be taken captive.
