How Social Security works.
Social Security Facts - Updated for 2025 • Social Security is funded by payroll taxes, not income taxes. It's a self-funded program and does not add to the national debt. • The Social Security Trust Fund still has money - but it's declining. It peaked at around $2.9 trillien, but is now being drawn down to cover payments. → Current projection: insolvency by 2033-2034, unless Congress acts. • Congress has borrowed trillions from the Trust Fund by issuing IOUs (Treasury bonds), using the surplus to fund other federal programs. So when politicians say "we need to cut Social Security to balance the budget", here's what they really mean: "We used your Social Security surplus to pay for tax cuts, wars, and corporate subsidies - and now we don't want to pay it back. So we'll cut your benefits instead." Don't let them. Social Security isn't the problem - it's the promise.
