I drove to Bodega Bay yesterday from Davis to distribute my mum's ashes next to where we spread my dad's. It was a bad day to choose -- Veterans' Day crowds were massive. Noticed a lot of people fishing in the Bay. It looked like some kind of contest. Then it hit me: people are starving.

@rebeccasolnit.bsky.social thank you for your important (and beautiful!) book, Orwell's Roses, and thank you especially for including irascible Orwell's instructions on tea, which I'm happy to report I follow to the letter apart from 6 teaspoons for a quart pot (I use 2, but it's very strong tea).

putting the most arrogant and least curious people alive in charge of razing the government to the ground has, as it turns out, some downsides

ah, the old conservative two-step:

1. deliberately sabotage a thing

2. oh look, the thing is having problems, guess we’ve got to pay twice as much to my buddy to replace it with worse and more expensive service

Trump feuded with the mail agency in his first term. Privatizing it could shake up consumer shipping and business supply chains.

In WW2, the British government mobilized to create a global, distributed logistics chain aimed solely at keeping Britain supplied with one resource.

Flagged as a critical war effort, at times it carried a shipping priority higher than munitions.

That resource was Tea. 🧵 /1

Alt text serves as a lot of different purposes, too! All of which improve accessibility (for more than just people with vision-impairments).

I use it quite often to understand memes and read fine-print screenshots.

This election outcome was literally the entire goal of Citizens United - just took them a little while to ramp up and position themselves
This would also be a REALLY good moment for folks to get a lil’ refresher on the Citizens United decision of 2010, which has had the entirely predictable imPACt of making this a country now run by people that billionaires have purchased to do their bidding.
Left of center folks are getting angrier at each other for losing instead of getting angry at Republicans for lying and demonizing their way to victory. They think they lost rather than Republicans won. That bodes ill.

Since the end of WWII, the one thing that knocked a US aircraft carrier out of service for a time wasn't the Soviets. It didn't happen in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or any other war either.

It was COVID.

Hi.
How should I start?
Honestly.
I have a feeling that my story with X/Twitter will be over soon.
So, I will duplicate my tweets here.

I know that many good people I met on Twitter are here.
I have a diary on Threads.
But it is different and will stay different.
