I drove to Bodega Bay yesterday from Davis to distribute my mum's ashes next to where we spread my dad's. It was a bad day to choose -- Veterans' Day crowds were massive. Noticed a lot of people fishing in the Bay. It looked like some kind of contest. Then it hit me: people are starving.

#birdtober is over. Really glad I decided to draw only from life this year and focus on a single species, Anna's hummingbird. And now I have a bunch of holiday cards made! #birds

#birdtober #birds Very windy here this morning; it calmed down by noon to allow the hummingbirds to perch in the tangerine tree. I dipped my brush in my tea instead of in the water. (Pro tip: don't do this, and certainly don't drink it if you do.)

#birdtober day 17: Young male Anna's hummingbird coming into adult moult. This is part of a month-long deep dive into one species, the Anna's hummingbird, working always from life and not photos (which I've had to do in the past.)

Blind contour drawings of an adult male Anna's hummingbird (looking at subject, not the paper). These are a great way to explore form without getting caught up in the whole guessing game of whether or not the drawing is correct. #birdtober #birdtober2024 #birds
