Better understanding why severe thunderstorms are most frequent close to mountain ranges and how they intensify will improve warnings for cities too.

Very well-developed tornadic signatures in radar imagery in France today:
It appears, based on radar, that this supercell highly likely produced 2 more tornadoes, given very convincing looking TDSes and couplets! So that was quite the cyclic supercell! Some individual radar frames and 2 loops, both with and without RGB: streamable.com/i2v99i, streamable.com/8f0ygp

The 2026 budget passback plan calls for eliminating NOAA Research, the scientific backbone that keeps weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings accurate and effective. This would have disastrous consequences.

This lab makes it possible for the NWS to forecast severe weather at the level we do. They can do much more too. If lost there’s no going back to fix it.
HRRR? RRFS? Those models don’t exist without NOAA’s Global Systems Lab.

The physics used in even more models? Not possible without us.

Decision-support tools like DESI and IDSS Engine used throughout the NWS? Also us.

What my lab does is *integral* to weather prediction and keeping people safe.

Yes indeed. Always impressive to visit the damages caused by a tornado, but this time it has been worse. Our feelings with the three deceased workers.

These plans will be very bad for forecasting and severe weather research in the US. Money invested in NOAA is extremely well spent, let alone the reduction of impacts on people. I am thinking of my US meteorology colleagues and hope this will not become reality. www.cnn.com/2025/04/11/c...

As we’re gearing up for tornado season, taking weather balloons offline in the Heartland of the US, also known as Tornado Alley, will directly affect the NWS’s ability to predict severe weather, including tornado-producing thunderstorms. This could lead to more severe weather-related deaths.
With Fewer Weather Balloons, People in US Heartland Will Be Less Prepared for Tornado Season
