I have an advent challenge for exhausted academics.

Take time each day to rest.

If 5 minutes is a challenge for you, then start there. I challenge you to take 20 minutes. You can work up to it.

Use a timer so you don't worry about how long it's been.

You can do this badly. Please try.

So I include a statement in all letters that I write now making explicit the costs of COVID for researchers even if there's no COVID statement. I'll continue to do that for another year or so for tenure and will likely keep in promotion letters longer.

In tenure decisions, context matters.

New research from Lauren Rivera et al uses an experiment to show that including Covid impact statements in tenure files leads to more favorable decisions, because it helps evaluators recognize structural constraints.

Another study showing academic progress is not just about "merit" for under-represented minorities.

Two very interesting things:

1) Well written and detailed external letters for URM candidates (esp. women) can mitigate the effect
2) Effect comes at Faculty/college level more than dept.
