So I include a statement in all letters that I write now making explicit the costs of COVID for researchers even if there's no COVID statement. I'll continue to do that for another year or so for tenure and will likely keep in promotion letters longer.

4: full disclosure, I didn’t prepare my own index and regretted it. have since done a few indexes for books I’ve edited. If you have good software to take away the tediousness it can be a very engaging/rewarding process to force you to think about the concepts you’re developing and building upon

3: remember many people will have access to an e-version of your book and will be able to search key terms in your manuscript. So privilege indexing passages that relate to higher order concepts that may not be found by obvious search terms for that concept so you add more value than ctrl+F
