Turns out - again - that I'm clueless about my own music. On the current album, the favorite of almost everybody who has given me feedback so far is absolutely not my favorite piece on the album. I'm absolutely fine with that, I'm just surprised. I guess I shouldn't be, as this has happened before.

Me in 2025. The goal is to get good enough to play a short solo in one of the new pieces we are working on with one of my bands right now.

What better time than Christmas eve to talk about Easter eggs in creative strategy No. 9: phaneronaut.com/2024/12/24/9...

Happy holidays, everbody!
#9 Hide Easter Eggs
Starting with an idea for an “easter egg” might generate more ideas how to hide it and how to connect it to the concept of the piece.

It‘s been a while since I did in- depth analogue sound design. It is still fun.

Something cool happend today at work: I always use silly still images from obscure Science Fiction movies as MS Teams backgrounds for virtual meetings. On a whim I wanted my background to be holiday-themed for the next weeks, so I changed it to a still from "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". (1/4)

Coming back to this: I found a Reddit discussion about this topic as well. www.reddit.com/r/classicalm...

I listened to some of the recommendations there. I especially liked the "Contes Cruel" by Tristan Murail.

This year my music got 96,000 streams on Spotify and had 46,000 listeners and I made… $185.61. Total.

This is indefensible. Truly an evil company. I totally get why people enjoy using Spotify, but if you want to support musicians, please consider buying our stuff on Bandcamp once in awhile. 💚

I've been a bit lazy with keeping up-to-date with my blog posts on creative strategies for musicians/ composers/ producers here, but there have been a few since the last time I mentioned them. Here's the latest: phaneronaut.com/2024/11/20/8...
#8 Use “conceptional continuity”
Use recurring themes and motifs to create conceptual continuity within your composition.

How to not be successfull at music, Part 4: "Art thrives in its limitations" or "creativity thrives with constraints" are more or less cliches. But a cliche is one for a reason. Most of the time there is a kernel of truth in it. phaneronaut.com/2024/09/03/4...

The Phaneronaut bunny has hidden two easter eggs in the latest album “The Song of the Machine“. The first person to find both of them before I post a “behind the scenes” blog on phaneronaut.com in a few weeks will be shipped a free copy of the Nekropolis ’22 CD “Live ’23” (world-wide).

Creative strategies for musicians, Part 3: Silence is music. Silence can be music in and of itself. A silent moment in a piece will highlight what’s happening before or after it. More about this, including some concrete ideas and examples: phaneronaut.com/2024/08/28/3...

It's the same for musicians and recording artists, at least those far below the "star" level. So, please, people, preach about anything you love - to people who you think might enjoy it.
This is why I have never done *any* actual promotion for my podcast (other than having an autotweeting linkbot before Musk killed the Twitter API) and instead just say at the end "word of mouth is the best promotion. If you enjoy this, please tell just one person about it".
If an author talks about their book it's like throwing a stone in mud. Bit of a splat but no great impact.

If a reader talks about that book it's like throwing a stone in a lake. Decent splash and ripples that go for miles.

Please, folks - talk about the books you love. Your power is magnificent.

Over the 5 years, I've been creating and releasing lots of music. During that time I have found that there are certain creative strategies that have helped me along the way, to find inspiration and (hopefully) help keep my music interesting. I'll be posting about these in the next few months.

Here's some new music by me. “The Song of the Machine”is a concept album about a song that travels through time and turns up in different musical eras:

At the moment, there is mainly information about previous releases on there, but some fun stuff is planned for the days after August 6th, when the new album will be released.
