Regretfully (for the sake of the authors and journal staff), I have this morning declined an invitation to review for a @royalsociety.org journal because of the Society’s continued refusal to stand up for its values in dealing with Elon Musk FRS.

Next week MPs are voting on the fate of our protected wildlife and habitats. Lives are on the line so why isn’t this everywhere?

I’m asking our local politicians to stand up and say something about this dangerous bill

X is a cesspit led by an unhinged billionaire who is desperately trying to stir up civil war in Britain.

Nobody with any sense or decency should be there.

No organisations, government departments, or politicians should be there.

Everyone who is, is enabling this monster.

This Ruddy Shelduck was at WWT Welney, yesterday. The BOU list says
'Last recorded in an apparently wild state in 1946. All subsequent records are considered ... of British or European captive origin.'
Is its status under review? I've heard there may be a breeding population in Norfolk

Nice (not-yet-lumped) Green-winged Teal at Welney WWT yesterday, from Lyle Hide.
I was surprised to see so many Whooper Swans have arrived already (no sign of any Bewick's Swans).
A Glossy Ibis dropped in briefly and a female/juv Ruddy Shelduck of unknown provenance was also present.

We had planned a day at Rutland Water today and spent a happy morning there but news of the American Golden Plover at Eyebrook Reservoir, sent us eight miles down the road. A filthy twitch? It would have been rude not to go. A lifer for me.

As autumn progresses, Reed Buntings move out beyond the river valleys & begin to explore further afield.
I always give the House Sparrows a quick double-take, in case they are feeding amongst them.
Really delightful visitors to the garden but easily overlooked.

As a county bird recorder I can honestly say that the best and easiest way for you to make your birding count, is to upload them to either eBird or BirdTrack. Doing so contributes directly to #ornithology and bird #conservation at both local and national levels.

Yesterday, I joined my two local bird clubs for a joint day-trip to Pennington Marsh, Hants. We noted 63 species including Little Stint, Spotted Redshank, Bar-tailed Godwit and a nice Grey Plover moulting out of summer plumage.
The last of the swallows were still flitting about.

A fine day in Berkshire. This morning I spent time with fellow Marshians stomping the marsh at Fobney Meadow to maintain the habitat.
After lunch the County Recorder found a juv. Ring-necked Duck on my local gravel pit - my first of the year.
