My New Year walk around the village yesterday morning produced some early Hazel catkins and 44 bird species, including Kingfisher, Yellowhammer, Redwing and a flock of 50 Linnet. I didn't see Coal Tit, Mistle Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Chiffchaff or Firecrest but they're all there to be seen.

2025: The year we got used to it
A final long read for 2025, charting how we got used to cruelty, incompetence and farce – and how 2026 will need us all to be much noisier

My primary birding focus for 2026 is the civil parish of Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire, where I live. I'll look at other flora and fauna too but hope to find birds nobody else is likely to notice. I have a side-bet with myself on finding 100 bird species in the parish.

I ended the year at Abberton Reservoir, Essex (a diversion on my route home from the Fens). Lesser Scaup, Scaup, Slavonian Grebe and Smew were highlights. A quick stop-off at Queen Mother Reservoir on my way back into Berks produced not much more than this fine M'ipit.

15 people joined today's final BOC field trip of 2025, beside the Kennet and round Moatlands pit. This Fox was a highlight and at least 41 bird species, including Kingfisher, Stonechat, Siskin, Redwing and Kestrel.

This is fucking grim. Somebody invented a white guy, an "IT professional" named Edward Crabtree, who stopped the Bondi shooting and spread it all over the internet, which was picked up by AI agents and slop aggregation sites.

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

This Government once vowed to be “the most nature-positive [we have] ever had”.

Months of blaming wildlife and stripping back protections have already made a mockery of that promise.

And if the rumoured cuts to BNG go ahead, it will deal yet another devastating blow to nature.

Parts of my award-winning installation in the Private Spaces exhibition at spudWORKS, Sway, New Forest, until 10th January.
The free prints are going like hot cakes but there are plenty of them.
I've been making and giving them away since 2013.
The whole show is worth a visit.

I was too ill to join this walk to Little Marlow Gravel Pit, still never been. it's over the County border, so not on my radar. I'll take a look sometime in 2026 though, when I'm passing. It's a good site, well watched by knowledgeable birders who often find interesting birds.

Far from ideal weather for BOC's field trip to Little Marlow Gravel Pits (Bucks) on Wednesday. The highlight was a flock of c100 Siskin (some pictured here showing how poor the light was). Snipe, Shoveler, Pochard, Treecreeper, Lapwing, Common Gull, no winter thrushes in evidence.
