The main winter songbirds have arrived: Bohemian Waxwing, Redpoll, and Pine Grosbeak. I have an eye out for Northern Shrike.

#Lichens form their complex thalli through a partnership involving at least a fungus and an alga. But can these living structures be rebuilt in vitro? For more than a century, people have tried. With @spribille.bsky.social we revisited 150 years of #lichen #resynthesis to ask: has anyone succeeded?

I just found out someone I used to know died by suicide in 2013. I was looking him up because he was a great songwriter and I wanted to know if he had any music. He was a really sweet guy.

Great albums with lower Pitchfork scores:
Anathallo - Floating World: 2.7
The Fire Theft - The Fire Theft: 5.0
Pedro the Lion - Winners Never Quit: 4.1
Tool - Lateralus: 1.9
A few months ago Indigo De Souza called Pitchfork “internet bullies” over a 6.6 review of her new album and asked her fans to tell the publication it was “whack”: “why not ONLY write reviews about art you LIKE?”

Last night she wore a shirt featuring the review onstage at Pitchfork Music Festival.
Indigo De Souza Played Pitchfork Fest In A Shirt Featuring Their 6.6 Review Of Her Album
Indigo De Souza released her new latest album Precipice back in July, and some drama ensued shortly thereafter. Stereogum contributor Grace Robins-Somerville reviewed it for Pitchfork and gave it a 6....

Darn it! I meant to post this on Hallowe'en - a huge lichen with a sinister expression! At Esquimalt lagoon, 3ft from the high tide line, next to the invasive green crab ID sign. I like its jaunty toupée.

Hypogymnia wilfiana is probably my current lichen favourite. I like the little floral lobes with apothecia. Not too uncommon in the more mature forests nearby.

I'm a Yes Album-Fragile-Close to the Edge Yes fan, but the only really positive thing I have to say about Tales From Topographic Oceans is that De La Soul sampled it on The Grind Date. Which is a great song and album.

I been trying to negotiate peace
With my own existence
She got a stockpile full of weaponry
She breaking every cease-fire agreement
Oh, the whole thing is full of decay
As sure as I'm made of dust
And into rust I know the beast is falling

Details: It was great!

Another birder woke me up from a rare nap this morning to tell me GREG was hanging out at the nature centre. My first for the local region.

One of my favourite things about birding is learning to be a subspecies birder. Flickers, Juncos, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Red-tailed Hawks, White-crowned Sparrow and Finch vocalization types. There is fantastic variation within a species.

It's been Juncopalooza in my yard these last few weeks. We normally only get the slate-coloured variety, but I did get one two-tone J. h. cismontanus subspecies, which usually live west of here. #birds 🌿

Anyone in Canada with some insights or perspectives on the NDP leadership candidates? My knowledge of the four who have announced their candidacy is pretty cursory.
