Double checking the keys in McCune and Geiser, yes, I think Cumberlandia is right. It looks like the lower surface is visible in a few spots showing that it is tan. The rarer X angustiphylla has a blackish lower surface, and X lineola is restricted to east of the Cascades (otherwise identical...

Ah, I mean I think it is X. cumberlandia. I don't know why I typed parmelia... shield lichens on the mind. So I agree with the ID of Cumberland Rock Shield. Sorry about the confusion.

I think if their calls like if a flicker call was more smooth and musical. And a little trill in between sometimes. I have a friend who can identify subspecies based on the call type, which is beyond me.
