I did not go into that one with a lot of hope, but Murrayfield remains a very difficult ground for the Auld Enemy. Congrats @scottishrugby.bsky.social on an impressive win!

I wonder if you've considered asking the President to declare that the storm isn't happening? Seems like a promising strategy, and could save people a lot of grief.
A strong storm is expected to move across the U.S. this weekend, bringing with it the risk of widespread and heavy rain to much of the South. Snow is also possible in parts of the Northeast, forecasters said, although just how much is still uncertain.
Strong Storm Is Forecast to Hit the South This Weekend With a Risk of Heavy Rain
It’s finally warming up, which means the storm will most likely bring rain instead of more dreaded ice. But forecasters warned that there may be a lot of it.

Hey y’all,

New paper out from the lab in Microbial Genomics, starting down the rabbit hole of IS elements in Paeudomonas syringae

Independent, ongoing clade-specific expansions of IS5 elements in Pseudomonas syringae
Insertion sequence (IS) elements are transposable regions of DNA present in a majority of bacterial genomes. It is hypothesized that differences in distributions of IS elements across bacterial strain...

How a Microbe Tunnels Its Way Through an Insect Gut—It's Weirder Than You Think
Some microbes can squeeze through tight spaces by wrapping themselves in their flagellum—the tail-like structure they use to move. Also, how adorable are those little guys?

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength
you don't become a martyr because you were a saint, you become a saint because you were martyred
I agree that we can’t make Alex Pretti a Benedictine monk because that’s a trap, but we can talk about the good things we did because people will see and hear them and think “I do those things too”

Great thread and really interesting stuff Tiffany!
So -- What are Ralstonia and why are they goopy?

Ralstonia are bacterial pathogens of plants. They colonize and clog the water-transporting xylem vessels, causing rapid-onset wilt disease—they can fatally wilt plants within days.

This timelapse by Jonathan Jacobs shows a sped-up time-course.

interesting nanopore sequencing experience. found this in the middle of my genome assembly. driven by a single read with a big homopolymer in the middle of it? pretty weird, something to look out for i guess (i wonder how many of these are in Genbank...)
