Anyone who knows me knows that I take Christmas, and Christmas traditions, very seriously. Its the first weekend of December, the tree is up and I attended a beautiful carol service last night.

Everyone deserves to enjoy nature.

Through my Green Roots Fund we’re backing fantastic projects, including the first white storks breeding colony in London for 600 years.

This is only the beginning - with more than £12m invested over the next 3 years.

This is really cool. When you see the storks at Knepp they feel pre-historic. This is basically bringing dinosaurs to Dagenham.

Everyone's talking about Ozempic in the corridors of Westminster but there's been one huge section of the conversation missing.

@alexmackaness.bsky.social has done a great job here exploring what weight loss jabs might mean for UK farming, nature and reaching net zero.

This is really really good. Depth and richness of evidence from BES is breath-taking.

And lots of lessons to be learned that, dare I say, have not currently been learned?
New post just out:

Six lessons from the 2024 election.

And what they mean for the next one.

Covering: Labour's fatal misunderstanding about why they won; effects of a more fragmented system; changes in media/polling.

Some thoughts on the new government's Environmental Improvement Plan, which deserved more attention, is broadly impressive, and yet faces significant challenges, some of which are of the government's own making. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/45...

After the excellent Environmental Improvement Plan launch yesterday, I'm in LabourList bigging up Labour's nature delivery. But that this is being hampered by its nature rhetoric.

Theres now a real opportunity for a reset to leave a lasting legacy for UK nature.

This is such an important step from the Government on the journey to cleaning up our air. Defra should be getting major kudos for this.
Credit to govt for taking a long overdue move to strengthen UK PM2.5 targets, aligning with the EU. More to be done, but the plan shows a step change in narrative & policy where clean air is taken more seriously.

A stronger budget performance today from the Chancellor than many in Westminster had expected.

Some strong announcements for addressing poverty and taxing the wealthiest. But addressing the cost of living is vital to keep the consensus the gov has built for its climate and environmental ambition.
Today's budget marked a significant change for living standards across the UK. With cost of living the most salient issue across voter demographics, LCEF welcomes these measures to bring down fuel poverty and end tax exemptions for the wealthiest amongst us.

Approach to replacing fuel duty revenue over the longterm is about right, I think: still have an incentive to switch from ICE to EVs, and will just be the new normal as drivers transition.

ENERGY BILLS! Paying for the renewables obligation brings the UK in line with other countries. Early investments in renewables were innovation spending, strange and unfair to get consumers to pay for that.

Great op-ed from Sarah Champion on potential of private jet tax. With COP30 and budget in the same month, its a policy aimed at only the richest that could pay for public transport at home and show climate leadership on the international stage.

This is important and depressing. Key point for me: you cannot understand anything in British politics today without understanding the radicalisation of right-leaning media in Britain and the power X has added to its ability to set the agenda.
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Rare that i find optimism in polling nowadays (17% what?) but great analysis here from @steveakehurst.bsky.social showing the Chancellor may (MAY) get away with tax rises in the budget if it leads to proper impacts on public services and cost of living.

At least this analysis is helping with my imposter syndrome.
Chris Mason has misunderstood the Caerphilly by-election with the idea that Reform lost "none of the above" voters who could have voted Reform to Plaid, or that Plaid took the potential Reform vote.

Hope BES academics can point out why this reading of Wales/Scotland v England misses the drivers
