We empirically separate economic factors from cultural backlash as competing explanations for right-wing populism, and find evidence for the former. We define the concept of “unfunded public goods.” 🧵

Showing that reduced access to public services fuelled far right support in 🇮🇹

Existing work on far right highlights globalization & migration grievances, what about people’s experiences with the state?

Thank you so much @draliceevans.bsky.social for such a careful and insightful engagement with our work!
Does women's rise threaten men's status?

Rettl et al find that although Swiss women's employment has surged, and triggered men's private anxieties, this hasn't been politicised.

So is "the battle of the sexes" just something politicians manufacture?

Our piece focus in perceptions of humanness of social media content. We use pair-wise models to compare platform and AI-generated content. We find:

- humans can in general separate real platform from AI content

- human rely on emotional cues to identify AI vs Human content
What an amazing collection, and an enormous undertaking to get all of these edited and published just days after the election. Kudos to the editorial team!

We have a new WP on the effect of increasing female labor market participation on gender attitudes. See the thread below!
New paper on gender backlash: shorturl.at/8eiZw

Findings: ⬆️ female labor market participation ⬆️ private grievances among men, but does NOT automatically translate into support for conservative gender policy or for far-right parties.

For this, you need activation by political elites.
