Just finished your book and streamed a lot of the music you reference. You have increased and broadened my enjoyment of music no end. Thank you.

I didn’t think it was possible for me to feel any more contempt for Trump. But here we are. The French word is, I think, ‘branleur’.

Just finished ‘The Enigma Girl’ - pretty much at a sitting. Loved it - gripping and humane and intelligent. Thank you very much indeed.

The tradition of Radio 3 broadcasting the New Year’s Day concert from Vienna would be more honoured in the breach than the observance.

Geoff Wheel - another ex-rugby player dies from MND. Two blokes I played alongside, and in the same team, also died from it. One in his 30’s.

I thought ‘Radio 3 Stoned’ might have provided a refuge from the music of John Rutter and similar Christmas schmalz. I was wrong.

Just bought a replacement copy of ‘The Faber Book of Reportage’. It’s 700 pages of the finest factual writing from 400BCE to 1980’s. My previous copy fell apart from over-use. Highly recommend.

Very few writers on ‘The Guardian’ seem to have heard of the subjunctive. Civilisation continues to crumble and I descend into old-gittery. I’ve lived too long.

You do not need a degree to visit an archive.

There is no terrifying Don at the door grilling potential visitors.

If it's your first time, a nice archivist will help you.

It's our shared history, our preserved records. Go explore it.

Guitar now strung. Thought I’d got through without laceration for what would have been only the third time ever. Just trimming the headstock and jammed the e into my thumb. The red pearl of incompetence duly appeared. Sigh.

I have been restringing guitars for nearly 55 years now. In all that time, I’ve managed to do it without drawing blood only twice. This post is a displacement activity. I hate doing it but am about to restring my OM. Wish me luck.

Something wonderful for the weekend!

About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, an ancient artist skilfully sculpted this tiny head of a cave lion from mammoth ivory. It is one of the World’s oldest known works of figurative art.

Currently listening to Radio 3. Why is Christmas music (usually) so awful?

Thank God for Sounds.
