In 2003 I started working in games
Some did well, some not or unreleased
These are those games🧵
1: Fuzz and Rocket. Unreleased
I learned the art of making 16 colour sprites & animations. Learned I was stupid & would work unpaid & that games don't always get released

The more I read franchise discourse, the more I am of the conviction that some people genuinely believe there is a version of long running settings that can only come into existence in a vacuum. A pure version. Like the creators are not so much making it, but reporting on it, like its a real thing.

In Australia you used to get a free eye test every 2 years.
This got changed in a presumably cost cutting measure to every 3 years.
Optometrists didn't seem to get the memo and start nagging you to book an appointment at 2 years. 🥴

Dry-brushing gets a bad rap. It can do a lot for a mini, fast. But has a kind of barrier where if you go that path, its harder to push it into a higher end clean and polished.
But if 'good enough' not 'showcase' is your aim its definitely worth exploring it if you have not.

The numbers on both go ape shit a little way in.
The silver ruler should only be 20% longer.
Why would a ruler 1000km long, have 22 segments on it?
These rulers are apparently about 100km wide :P
(And why would you AI an ad this damn simple to make)
They released this like this

Why would anyone ever drive a car by people who do not Look At MEASUREMENTS

Look. I'm going to need every skilled miniature painter to tone it down a couple of notches, so mine can look better in comparison.
It's not that big an ask. If anything I want you to put *less* effort in.

Watching @roguehobbies.bsky.social glazing video reconfirms (for me) my conviction that glazing blends is for when you want absolute, almost mathematical control over your transitions, at the cost of time. Wet blending will remain my go to 90% of the time for its speed, if it lacks a little control.

Quick WIP
The Necromunda Blue bases are pretty much done. Time to work the models.

The left can't (Warhammer) meme.
A thread of silly warhammer images I have made.

I sometimes worry that I'm too Warhammer obsessed.
Then I remember I also sometimes talk about Dr Who. So its ok.

New Sylvaneth character.
I quite like the Sylvaneth, and own a bunch of them awaiting their turn on the painting table. But the wyldwoods are a road block to playing them. Having to truck around bulky, fragile groves... as well as your army. Is a pain in the ass.

Having been primarily a freelancer for an extended period of time, I have gotten out of practice with actually having activities with specific starting times/locations.
All of a sudden with pre O week, O week and uni, I've got places I'm supposed to be at exact specific times... it feels weird.

Next up on the hobby table: The GSC big boy and 2 of the wee folk. I'd usually finish the bases on minis first. But the initial dry brushing on the bone for the stealers was sprinkling white paint onto the finished bases. So now: bone, then base, then paint the mini.

Artists, quote with something silly!

For those keeping score, Bo just made a video quitting warhammer... again, again, again. This time for super, super reals.

Retro Console Waffle.
For a long time if you bought a console in Aus, it came with a composite RCA cable to connect to your TV (Even the Wii was still sold this way)
Composite signals tended to be on the blurry side, but given its all most of us had, most of us didn't know there were options.

As an art monkey I am constantly having to drift between trying to push myself to get better vs locking down certain pipelines and stylisation so as to have a repeatably consistent saleable product.
Image 1, 2, 3 I can make fairly consistently now.
4 I'd never promise, I feel shaky an uncertain.

We asked game developers to share their thoughts on Google's Project Genie, a "world builder" powered by generative AI.

"Even the deeply misguided notion that this could somehow replace humans in the game development process is dangerous to the continuation of the artform," said @ramiismail.com
Game Developers Respond to Google's Project Genie: "A Deeply Unpleasant and Messy Abomination"
This Week in Videogames spoke to game developers about Google's generative-AI world builder, about how it might affect the future of game development.

Seeing so many games/illustration creatives I've worked with over years long term struggling to get steady work is why I'm pivoting to Graphic Design. There is some skill cross over, & lot more work out there, even if it's not exactly my 'dream job'.
Would still take games work in a heartbeat tho.

First batch of Genestealers done for this years GSC army.
Still need to tighten the pipeline for the greens, it took way too long for a batch paint. But the dry brush doing the heavy lifting on the bone and muscle it working out well.

It is an irony that trying to sort out Uni O week activities is actually quite disorienting.

I see there are folks getting angry at the term 'sports ball'. I know its use is often condescension laden. But I assure you, if you see me write it, that is not the case. I'm happy folks enjoy their game. If I use it, its cause I don't know what games being played & don't care enough to find out :P
