Took me a bit to process how big a deal this report actually is--its thus far the only review to look at the entire body of currently available research. It took two years to conduct, stands at 1,000 pages, and completely contradicts the Cass Review and the common arguments for bans on this care.

It's a pretty old book now but Arjun Appadurai's "Fear of Small Numbers" is a great essay on why moral panics over minority groups can actually get more intense the smaller that group is. I often think of it these days.

In a few years time genius Labour strategists are gonna be very confused when the public concludes that if everyone agrees Reform policies are the best you're actually better off voting for Reform rather than Labour. They'll then draw the lesson that Labour should be a little bit more like Reform.

This is a solid rule. I used to work for a large academy trust, emailing people at all levels of the org. Teachers, teaching assistants, administrators - the emails would have at least 2 paragraphs and a proper sign-off.
Executive level and principals would often answer like they were texting me.

A quick way to check if you have power: how formal are your emails to ppl you work with? Ppl used to being on shaky ground or being challenged tend to stay formal, keep things professional, in written correspondence. Straight white male profs sometimes don’t even bother with capitals or full stops.
Often when I’m talking ppl through potential research impact, I ask who has power, or what power they themselves have. And almost always ppl want to complain they don’t have any power. But digging usually shows that means they don’t have total authority, and neglect things like influence, legitimacy
