This is #USSRecruit TDE-1, a key component of basic training when Naval Training Center San Diego was open. There’s a museum just inside the entrance amidships on the port side; you can’t go on the weather decks or bridge. A fixture of what is now Liberty Ststion. #NavalHistory #PacificHistoryGuide

Because Japan aimed to abolish the unequal treaties that had been imposed on it by Western countries when it opened its doors to the world, prisoners of war during the Russo-Japanese War and FWW were treated extremely courteously (though there were exceptions).

Light cruiser #IJN Sendai was sunk in the early morning hours #OTD November 3, 1943 during the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. She had taken 6" hits from #USN cruisers in night action before the #ImperialJapaneseNavy force withdrew, unable to stop the Allied invasion of #Bougainville. #NavalHistory

Takao was wounded by a torpedo from USS Darter on 23rd Oct. 1944 in the Palawan Passage. Myoko, damaged by TF38's the next day in the Sibuyan Sea, was torpedoed in December that year at Cam Ranh Bay by USS Bergall. Neither fought in the Second World War again. #NavalHistory #PacificHistoryGuide
#OTD 29th October 1946 the #ImperialJapaneseNavy heavy cruiser #Takao was sunk as a target in the #MalaccaStrait by HMS Newfoundland. Takao, lead ship of her class of four ships, had been surrendered to the British at Seletar on 21st September 1945, alongside another heavy, #Myoko. #NavalHistory

Tsubame shared a name with J.N.R.'s other business venture, the much-loved little brothers of #Tokyo baseball, the Kokutetsu #Swallows. Sankei briefly owned the team, renamed Atoms, before Yakult bought them out and changed the name back. Go Go Swallows! ☂️🐦‍⬛

Jackie Robinson's uniform number 42 is retired by all MLB teams, but in Japan it is disliked because the pronunciation is associated with Shini (death).
For this reason, it is common for American players visiting Japan to play with the number 42.
