When I teach Vietnam, I explain that opposition to the war really grew in fits and starts. Some big rallies and visible protests, but also a steady stream of celebrities and ordinary folks breaking with their priors and taking a new stand.

This last month, this last week, feels like a real shift.

I’m sending you these sunflowers, because they symbolize resilience, strength, perseverance. We need these qualities to find light in the darkness.

Another of those films that I was barely aware of this morning and consider an all-time great by evening: The Small Back Room boxd.it/cryDrd
A ★★★★★ review of The Small Back Room (1949)
Though made in 1950, this feels like a dispatch right from the very heart of the war. Set in 1943, when the Allies were losing, it tells a story both minor and immense about a small team of scientists...

2025 wasn’t the year I hoped it to be, and this was reflected in how little time I had for film. This year I’m already have 3 in the bag, and hope to get more back into my normal routine.

Revisited MON ONCLE last night, a film that was among my first forays into foreign film back in my early 20s. The broader themes seem more heavy-handed as I’ve aged, but the little set details and nuanced manners (among the supporting cast especially) just glistened for me. A masterpiece.

I love the Charlie Brown Christmas special. There's an eerie loneliness that hangs over the whole thing. The music, Charlie Brown's depression, the dying little tree, the flatness of the children's voices, the inevitability of death. A Christmas masterpiece.

My oldest just early graduated (today!) from Texas public school and I just want my other kids to finish before any of this impacts them.
Happening now: Texas leaders announcing a rollout of a statewide program to put TPUSA chapters in high schools and colleges across the state. Gov. Abbott adds that schools that stand in the way should be reported to the Texas Education Agency.
