ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.”

What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.

The Montreal Canadiens are playing the Minnesota Wild in Minneapolis tonight. The players have been recommended to stay in/eat at the hotel, take the team bus to the arena, and carry passports.

Perhaps we shouldn't be hosting the World Cup and the Olympics...

Texas fire department helps ICE detain roofers—using tower ladder truck that should be reserved for local emergency.

Agents grab at workers' legs to yank them off multi-story house—even using pepper spray atop roof.

Firefighters did equip ICE with safety harness for this risky series of maneuvers.

Derzou Uzala is one of the best films from Kurosawa's catalog. It was hard to find even 20 years ago on torrents.
While director Kurosawa Akira did love and respect Shakespeare, his Western literary influence did not end with the Anglosphere. From a young age, Kurosawa obsessed over the works of the Russian literary giants - Dostoevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, and many others.
How The Kremlin Saved Kurosawa Akira - Unseen Japan
Japanese film maestro Akira Kurosawa was at his lowest point - and then the Soviets stepped in. How the famous director found a second life in Russia.

MingPao Canada sustained my immigrant need of language in my formative years. I remember fondly sending a handwritten passage in and it was posted in their revolving guest column and they paid teenage me $35. Chinese media has changed a lot in the last decade.
At Lingua Sinica, our site for global Chinese-language media insights (and PRC global media mapping) we look at the closure in Canada of Ming Pao, the last print daily published domestically. It's a story of digital change, but also a changing Chinese community. lingua-sinica.org/canadas-last...
Canada's Last Chinese Daily Closes - Lingua Sinica
Ming Pao Canada announced last week that it will cease publication, marking the end of an era for Chinese-language journalism in Canada.

I also just learnt that Mayor Mamdani is an Arsenal fan. Good stuff.
Yesterday, we hosted a watch party for the Africa Cup of Nations final at Surrogate’s Court near City Hall. Fans of all ages packed the room — the energy was incredible. It may have been Senegal and Morocco playing, but it was NYC through it all.

One of the stories that makes me the saddest out of this ICE invasion is one out of the Minnesota Star Tribune today about ICE agents eating at a little Mexican restaurant in the small town of Willmar, Minn, —and then, when they were done, arresting some of the workers.

ICE is a paramilitary that kills people in the USA.
🚨WHOA. The El Paso Medical Examiner says it will rule the death of a 55-year-old Cuban man at ICE's "Camp East Montana" tent camp as a homicide.

He was allegedly choked to death by a guard during a "struggle" after he refused to enter a housing unit without his medications.

What happened between 2013-14? Trying to jog my memories but I don't recall what was memorable before 2014.
31,714 births were registered in Hong Kong in 2025, the lowest figure since World War II, once again demonstrating that monetary baby bonus incentives have no long-term effect on the birth rate

In this scenario some people are headed to a retreat on a Gulf Island, there’s a high school sports team on board, and the car alarms never stop

One of the few podcasts that I still listen to regularly. Maybe not so...
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
