Looking east from Ger Tor on Dartmoor. Winter, late afternoon. A beam of light catches the far hills. A scattering of snow.

The one upside of not being able to get outside and do the things we normally do is that it's 6pm on Christmas Eve and I've already prepped veg for tomorrow and wrapped presents - This is NOT normal.

Here's the Teign Gorge last Christmas - wishing everyone a restful break and all the best for 2026.

If you're in Exeter and looking for a fun evening of live music to kick off your Christmas shenanigans then our son's band The Juliettes are headlining this showcase of new bands down at Bomba on the quayside tomorrow night.

Should be a good night...

I’m reminded of watching two old ladies ask a teenage goth for directions and she politely told them and when she was out of earshot one lady said “You know where you are with a goth”

Hard agree.
Perhaps there should be a small fee for every time you post a screenshot on Bluesky of some bullshit happening on X. Like the original 10p carrier bag charge, it wouldn't be prohibitive but it would make you think, hang on, do I have to do this?

#OnThisDay in 1981, 16 people, including the entire crew of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne, were drowned during the rescue of the merchant ship Union Star in an intense storm. Listen to the voices of those touched by the tragedy in this recording.

These are stunningly beautiful... and as far removed from the standard modern Bristol firefighting tunic as it's possible to imagine.

Not sure how well they'd stand up in a filthy Devon thatch fire mind... 🔥
A selection of beautiful firemen’s coats from 19th-century Japan. The coats were reversible — one side was plain and the other side (worn on the inside while tackling blazes) was decorated with rich and symbolic imagery: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/japanese-firemans-coats-19th-century

Far From Nowhere by @josienneclarke.com is one of my favourite albums of the year and @alecbowmanclarke.com's wonderful short film Deluded gives a brilliant insight into it's production process and the often harsh realities of being an independent musician in 2025.

PSA for Exeter folk who use the B3212 through the Teign Valley to get out to Dartmoor - Devon County Council are finally renewing the bit which is subsiding just up from Steps Bridge, which means it's going to be closed for 4 months from the 5th Jan.

Needs doing but sure it's going to cause chaos!

A very good (if depressing) read
Let me help here.

If most AI projects lose money, someone has to pay for them.

Hence: cost cutting.

So, actually, you can blame AI. But not for the usual reason claimed. AI is not replacing humans, it is replacing profits. And without profits, you can’t employ humans.

Companies Are Blaming AI for Layoffs. The Real Reason Will Piss You Off.
180,000 tech workers lost their jobs in 2025. Companies say it’s because of AI. Oxford researchers call BS.

This is bloody great... love how they are faffing over tuning and it's all sounding a bit ramshackle and then that intro riff hits and it all resolves itself into something brilliant.

Our boy loves Geese / Cameron Winter and I'm starting to see why.
