It’s been a pleasure working with Lex and everyone in the politics vertical at Teen Vogue. I’m heartbroken that my column, Disability Visibility, is gone. Teen Vogue was one of the few places that published disabled journalists regularly. I just spent the last 2 months working on my next column
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

under capitalism, the primary power we have against corporations is as consumers

when they get so big that they don’t actually need to worry about consumers, they can effectively function like kings. totally indifferent to our anger because our individual dollars don’t add up to enough to care

There’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to build on the rubble of what’s being destroyed before our eyes. Private corporations bending over to forcefeed everyone government-approved speech is evil and amoral, but more than anything this creates boring, inauthentic, unwatchable shit.

This shouldn’t come at the cost of destroying existing affordable housing, thereby placing the burden of solving housing on tenants.

Here’s what Vancouverites want from the Park Board: repair the Stanley Park train, support crucial fundraising events that also use public space in a way that’s financially accessible, don’t privatize public space. Instead they’re platforming Rowling at the expense of all of the above.
I'm not sure if this is the correct course of political action, but I wrote to the Vancouver Park Board in support of finding a way to keep the Bright Nights charity fundraiser in Stanley Park instead of the new $49 Harry Potter event

It's super cool how Vancouver Parks Board held an in camera meeting earlier this year to unanimously approve a Harry Potter "experience" in Stanley Park for the fall and winter.

$84 tickets for 60 minutes.

It replaced a charity fundraiser for firefighters and burn victims.

It's easy to forget now but we had decades of steady advancement on trans rights. The 2016 bathroom bills invited huge backlash! It was only after the media constructed sports and youth medications as 'debates' that opposition moved from the far right to the polite center.
The repression of trans people is not, by and large, a grassroots outpouring of hatred from the American people. It's something that's been carefully planted and tended over years by a handful of media people and their pet reporters.
Heightened Scrutiny, a very good doc about the Supreme Court case that was just ruled on, does an impeccable and infuriating job laying out just how culpable the NYT and Atlantic are for the nation’s transphobia www.avclub.com/sundance-202...

Nothing sums up the state of affairs for transgender Americans quite like the US Supreme Court denying trans people life-saving healthcare at the same time that the Trump administration shuts down suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ people.

These bastards want us all dead.
Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

Your periodic reminder that Rick Steves is the best. Like if Readers Digest made Anthony Bourdain (I mean that as a compliment).
In the spring of 2008, I feared America was on the verge of war with Iran — and, believing that it’s good style to get to know people before you bomb them, I made “Rick Steves’ Iran,” a one-hour special that could (and would) only debut on PBS. Sadly, this special has become pertinent again today.
