On Feb. 14th I try always to give honor to one of the greatest contributors to American democracy in our nation’s history, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, Douglass never knew his actual birthdate, and adopted Feb. 14th as the day. His penetrating insights about our country inspire me daily.

Following on the overwhelming response to last week's column, I wrote a second dispatch imagining how the Musk takeover would be covered by the US media if it was happening overseas, and they felt comfortable calling a spade a spade.... www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/white-nati...

Every headline that does not say “illegal” or “unconstitutional” is a failure to convey to the public the stakes of what is going on.

Why is the GOP shielding Elon Musk from Oversight!?

Maybe…because while we’re sitting here he’s dismantling agencies, threatening national security, stealing our data, and breaking the law.

Dems are not clutching our pearls.
Dems are fighting back.
And we won't stop!

My middle school bully came from a rich, politically connected family.

One day when he was late to English class, everyone watched as I put a thumbtack in the only open chair.

Everyone howled with delight as the bully howled in agony.

Not even the teacher ever told him who did it.

How about “No taxation without representation?“ The Musk regime is claiming the right to take our money without heeding the laws made by our elected representatives.
OK, "Reclaim the Treasury Payment System" isn't a great rallying cry for getting the masses out in the streets. But if you're in the media and not writing about Musk's ongoing coup and not screaming, "Fire!," then you are doing it wrong

Here's my howl. My new column www.inquirer.com/columnists/a...

This is an excellent summary of our situation, which is quite bad.

It’s not just that they’re breaking laws. They’re breaking laws that are centrally important to our constitutional order and are constitutive of its identity. They are targeting the best parts of what democracy has built here.
Ignore the media headlines reporting that freezing federal spending or shuttering federal agencies “raise questions” or “push boundaries.” It’s an anticonstitutional lawbreaking spree.

This explains everything.

"Trump famously turns on aides who he believes eclipse him. But by his own account, he remains enamored of Musk, seeming to relish the fact that the world’s wealthiest person is working for him."
“Elon Musk’s influence appears unchecked,” @jonlemire.bsky.social writes. “But the Republican-controlled Congress has shown no desire so far to rein Musk in. There has never been a private citizen like him.”

Good time to see which people are genuine conservatives vs those who are happy to go along with destroying checks and balances for short-run goals
Conservative budget wonks (Manhattan Instiutte, Tax Foundation) confirming that this is a consittutional crisis. Not liberal hysteria. Happening right now.

I'm glad that America is doing real classic end of empire stuff. A king who is visibly losing his mind declaring a war based on a dream he had. Greedy courtiers feuding over access to the treasury. Some looks are timeless.

Just when I worry I'm turning into Candide, I remember that it was long before the revolutions that Voltaire said to cultivate our gardens.

In troubled times, tending to our gardens is how we survive, heal, and grow.

I'm not naïf, but I will never surrender my optimism.
