Utrecht Paleogeography model in prep!

We're integrating our detailed reconstructions of orogenic belts and lost subducted plates into one plate tectonic and paleogeography model. We'll launch the updated Paleolatitude.org soon, and more tools for geodynamic, paleoclimate, and paleobiology studies!

Today feels like a good day to remind everyone that there is literally no empirical evidence that economic growth will just continue if the world heats up to, say, 3°C by 2100.

Continued growth is just *assumed* in every economic model of the relationship between temperatures and growth.

I am grateful that I had the chance to sit down with one of the undergraduate journalists at The California Aggie to discuss my master’s research in the geodynamics lab at UC Davis and some of the exciting field work I’ve been a part of this summer

Today, the Python Software Foundation withdrew a huge NSF proposal because they refused to betray their commitment to their “diverse and international community” by capitulating to the demands of the current regime. 3 cheers for my favourite language, please

An OpenAI executive said GPT-5 found solutions to 10 "previously unsolved" math problems when in reality all it did was find online references to places where people had already solved them

Well, the architects of the outage are actually AWS, who control a global majority of the cloud computing services that web services like Canvas depend on. This is what happens when the internet has all of its eggs in one basket
i teared up when i read these beautiful words from the CEOs of KKR investments, the current co-owners of Instructure/Canvas & therefore architects of the outage now making it so none of my students can access any learning materials

The inherent corollary of "this is murder" is that we prosecute and punish people who commit murder.
Trump just bombed six more people in the Caribbean, for a total of 27 civilians who have been killed so far by the US military. It’s illegal for the military to target civilians who do not pose an immediate threat. This is murder.

I was able to try out an earthquake (Mw 7.0) shake simulator at UC Davis today, super cool. Would not want to experience it for real. Probably.

It was a pleasure to contribute to this article, which talks about how AI contributes to seismology - indeed, we have seen tremendous progress in the use of machine learning to detect small events.

this was the most important thing I learned during my CS degree and now the most frustrating thing to see as I watch my peers (other grad students) and younger computer scientists replace critical thinking with AI
Coding isn't just the act of typing code, but the learned experience of problem solving. IMO educators need to maintain that coding is learning how to enrich your portfolio of transferable skills. GenAI will only ever be a mid tier shortcut provider to people that already know what they're doing.

Something new to consider on my PhD search
The Trump regime has ordered nine top universities to agree to its demands or lose access to federal funds.

Reminder for any school dealing with Trump's extortion: You can't appease a tyrant.

Jane Goodall was an inspiration to all young female scientists, I hope she rests in peace
The great Dr Jane Goodall, ethologist and campaigner for great apes and much else, has died at the age of 91.

She loved this _Far Side_ cartoon, and wrote a forward for a later Gary Larson collection.

In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

It’s just so great that the GRFP rules have been updated. Decided not to apply in my first year of grad school so I could apply this year, I guess now I’ll never be eligible 🙃

Northwestern Venezuela was struck by several large earthquakes today and yesterday (M6.2, 5.8, 6.3). Why did these shallow thrust events occur in an area where previously only strike-slip earthquakes have been documented? We speculate about the geology in our latest post.
